A 7Z file usually contains an MKV video rather than being a video itself. To obtain the MKV, extract the archive; re-encode only if the extracted video uses another format or codec.
What the 7Z format is
7Z is a compressed archive format created by 7-Zip and supported by programs such as PeaZip and WinRAR. It stores one or more files inside a single archive and can use strong compression, encryption, and split archive volumes such as .7z.001. You may receive a 7Z file when someone packages a large video collection, backs up media, or divides a download into smaller parts.
What the MKV format is
MKV, or Matroska Video, is a multimedia container, not a compression archive. It can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapter markers, attachments, and metadata in one file. MKV is useful for preserving multiple language tracks and subtitles, storing high-definition video, and keeping media elements together without combining them into a proprietary format.
How to actually convert 7Z to MKV
Extract the MKV with 7-Zip
- Install 7-Zip or another application that supports 7Z archives.
- Open the archive in 7-Zip and check its contents for files ending in
.mkv. - Select the archive and choose 7-Zip → Extract Here or 7-Zip → Extract to folder.
- Open the extracted folder and use the MKV file directly.
From a terminal, extract an archive with:
7z x archive.7z -oextracted
For multipart archives, keep every numbered part in the same folder and open the first file, normally archive.7z.001. 7-Zip will read the remaining parts automatically.
Extract with a no-install online option
You can use the free converter on 101convert.com to process the file without installing software. This is appropriate for non-sensitive archives; do not upload archives containing private, confidential, or copyrighted material unless you are authorized to do so.
Convert the extracted video when necessary
If the archive contains MP4, AVI, MOV, or another video instead of MKV, use FFmpeg. To place compatible streams in an MKV container without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy output.mkv
If the codecs are incompatible with the intended player, re-encode the video and audio:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mkv
Use -map 0 when you want to retain all detected streams, including additional audio and subtitle tracks. Check the output with a media player such as VLC or MediaInfo.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Extracting a file from 7Z is lossless; it does not change the video quality. A 7Z archive cannot be directly converted into video because it may contain documents, folders, or several unrelated media files. MKV output size is determined by the contained streams, not by the archive extension.
Remuxing with -c copy preserves quality and is fast, but some older televisions, mobile devices, and editing applications may not support every MKV codec, subtitle type, or audio format. Re-encoding improves compatibility but reduces quality and requires substantially more processing time. Encrypted 7Z archives require the archive password before extraction.
