What the 7Z format is
7Z is a compressed archive format created by 7-Zip. It stores one or more files and folders in a single package, often with high compression, optional encryption, solid compression, and split volumes such as .7z.001. Software distributions, downloadable media collections, backups, and file transfers commonly use 7Z archives. 7-Zip, PeaZip, WinRAR, and command-line tools can create or open them.
A 7Z archive does not define the codec or container of a file stored inside it. A file named video.webm remains a WEBM file after extraction; the 7Z layer is only packaging and compression.
What the WEBM format is
WEBM is an open media container designed mainly for web playback. It commonly contains VP8, VP9, or AV1 video and Vorbis or Opus audio. Browsers, video players, streaming systems, and some editing tools support it without requiring the archive to remain attached.
WEBM is useful when a site, browser-based application, or video workflow specifically requires web-oriented codecs. VP9 and AV1 can provide smaller files than older codecs at comparable quality, but compatibility varies by browser, hardware, and editing software.
How to actually convert 7Z to WEBM
- Install 7-Zip or another archive utility. On Windows, right-click the archive and choose 7-Zip → Extract to “archive\”. On Linux or macOS with the 7-Zip command-line tool, run
7z x archive.7z -oextracted. - Inspect the extracted files. If one is already named
*.webm, no media conversion is needed; use that file. If the archive contains a video such asinput.mp4,input.mkv, orinput.mov, convert that extracted file. - For a broadly supported WEBM containing VP9 video and Opus audio, run
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 31 -b:v 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm. FFmpeg reads the source, encodes the video and audio, and writes the WEBM container. - For a faster conversion with larger output, specify a video bitrate instead:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -b:v 2M -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm. Adjust2Mto the resolution, frame rate, and required file size. - To convert through the website, extract the 7Z archive first, then upload the contained video to 101convert.com and select WEBM. An archive cannot become a playable WEBM merely by changing its filename extension.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Extraction is lossless, but re-encoding is not: quality depends on the source and FFmpeg settings. With VP9 constant-quality encoding, lower -crf values produce better quality and larger files; a typical range is 20–35. Use the original source rather than a previously compressed copy when available.
FFmpeg may copy compatible streams without re-encoding, for example ffmpeg -i input.webm -c copy output.webm. This is fast and preserves quality, but it works only when the streams and container are compatible with WEBM. MP4 features such as H.264 video, AAC audio, subtitles, chapters, or attachments may require re-encoding, removal, or a different container.
Password-protected 7Z archives must be unlocked during extraction. Multi-volume archives require every part, including files such as archive.7z.001, archive.7z.002, and later parts. Extraction also requires enough free space for the uncompressed media and conversion requires additional space for the output.
