A TAR.GZ archive may contain a video that a browser, media player, or editing application requires as a WEBM file. The conversion therefore normally consists of extracting the archive, locating the video, and converting or remuxing that video into the WEBM container.

What the TAR.GZ format is

TAR.GZ is a two-layer archive format: TAR combines files and directories without compressing them, while GZIP compresses the resulting TAR stream. It is common for Linux and Unix software source packages, server backups, command-line distributions, application bundles, and datasets.

GNU tar creates and extracts these archives; common graphical programs include 7-Zip, PeaZip, and The Unarchiver. A TAR.GZ file can contain one video, several videos, metadata, subtitles, or no media at all. It is not itself a video container, so changing its filename to .webm cannot produce a playable WEBM file.

What the WEBM format is

WEBM is an audiovisual container designed primarily for web playback. It commonly stores VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio and is supported by current Chromium-, Firefox-, and Safari-based browsers, HTML5 video players, streaming workflows, and many editing tools.

WEBM is useful when a website or application specifically requires an open web-oriented format. VP9 and Opus can provide smaller files than many older codecs at comparable quality, but WEBM is not universally supported by legacy players or professional editing software. The extension identifies the container; the actual video and audio codecs still determine compatibility.

How to actually convert TAR.GZ to WEBM

Using FFmpeg after extraction

  1. Extract the archive into a separate directory. On Linux, macOS, or Windows with a TAR-compatible shell, run mkdir extracted && tar -xzf archive.tar.gz -C extracted. In 7-Zip, open the archive and use Extract; if necessary, extract the intermediate .tar file as well.
  2. Inspect the extracted files and identify the source video. Use ffprobe extracted/path/video.mp4 to view its streams, duration, resolution, and codecs. If the archive contains several videos, select the specific file that should become WEBM.
  3. For a broadly compatible VP9/Opus result, run ffmpeg -i extracted/path/video.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 32 -b:v 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm. Lower the VP9 -crf value for higher quality and a larger file; values around 30–35 are a practical starting range.
  4. Check the result with ffprobe output.webm or play it in a browser. Keep the extracted source and archive until the output has the expected duration, audio tracks, subtitles, and resolution.

If the extracted video already uses WEBM-compatible codecs, avoid unnecessary re-encoding with ffmpeg -i extracted/path/video.webm -c copy output.webm. Stream copying is faster and does not reduce quality, but it can fail if the source codecs or container metadata are incompatible with WEBM.

Using the built-in online converter

On 101convert.com, upload the TAR.GZ file, choose WEBM as the output format, and start the conversion. This requires no installed software, but an archive containing multiple media files may require you to select an individual result, and archives containing no supported video cannot produce a meaningful WEBM file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Extracting a video does not change its quality. Transcoding with VP9 or another codec decodes and re-encodes the video, so it can introduce quality loss; use a lower CRF value or a higher bitrate when the source contains fine detail or motion. GZIP compression applied to the archive does not make the extracted video smaller in the same way, because video codecs already use specialized compression.

FFmpeg may discard or fail to carry over unusual subtitle, chapter, attachment, or multi-audio streams unless they are mapped explicitly. For example, -map 0 attempts to include all input streams, but every stream must be supported by the WEBM container and selected codecs. WEBM is usually unsuitable for arbitrary attachments and some advanced subtitle formats.
