Programs that accept PNG images cannot open a 7Z archive directly, so PNG files must first be extracted from the archive. If the archive contains JPEG, TIFF, or other image formats instead, those files require a separate image conversion step.
What the 7Z format is
7Z is an archive format created by 7-Zip and supported by applications such as 7-Zip, p7zip, PeaZip, and The Unarchiver. It stores one or more files inside a compressed container and can use encryption, solid compression, and filenames or folders. A 7Z extension does not indicate the type of files inside; the archive may contain PNG images, documents, installers, or any other data.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a lossless raster-image format used for screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, logos, and images requiring transparency. It preserves image data without JPEG-style lossy artifacts and supports an alpha channel, but usually produces larger files than JPEG for photographic content. PNG is an image format, whereas 7Z is an archive format.
How to actually convert 7Z to PNG
Extract PNG files with 7-Zip
- Install and open 7-Zip File Manager.
- Select the
.7zarchive and choose 7-Zip → Open archive. - Identify files whose names end in
.png. Use the archive's search or sort controls if it contains many files. - Select the required images and click Extract.
- Choose an output folder, then click OK. The extracted files are already PNG files; no image re-encoding is required.
To extract the complete archive from a command prompt, run:
7z x archive.7z -ooutput
To extract only PNG files, run:
7z e archive.7z -ooutput *.png
Use x to preserve folders inside the archive and e to place matching files in one output directory. If the archive is password-protected, 7-Zip prompts for the password or accepts it with -pPASSWORD; avoid exposing passwords in shell history.
Convert online
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. The result depends on the archive contents: PNG files can be extracted, but files in another image format must be converted separately.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Extracting a PNG from 7Z does not reduce quality because the stored PNG data is copied rather than recompressed. A 7Z archive containing no PNG files cannot be converted directly into a meaningful PNG; inspect its contents with 7z l archive.7z first. If it contains JPEG or another image type, open that image in an editor such as ImageMagick or GIMP and export it as PNG. Conversion to PNG may increase file size, and it cannot restore detail already lost through lossy source compression.
