A ZIP archive may contain PNG images that an application, website, or device cannot read until they are extracted. The required operation is usually archive extraction, not image conversion; only non-PNG files inside the archive need a separate image conversion step.

What the ZIP format is

ZIP is a lossless archive format that stores one or more files and folders in a single .zip file, optionally using compression and password encryption. Windows File Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, Linux archive managers, 7-Zip, WinZip, backup tools, and software installers commonly create ZIP archives.

ZIP files are used for email attachments, downloadable image collections, document packages, website assets, backups, and grouped files that need to be transferred as one item. The archive itself is not an image and cannot be opened by a PNG-only editor or image viewer.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format stored in a .png file. It uses lossless compression, so saving an existing PNG does not discard image data. PNG supports grayscale, RGB, and RGBA images; the RGBA form provides an alpha channel for transparent pixels.

PNG is suited to screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, logos, line art, and images requiring transparency or sharp edges. It is usually less efficient than JPEG for large photographic images, and converting a JPEG to PNG does not restore detail already lost through JPEG compression.

How to actually convert ZIP to PNG

When the archive already contains PNG files

  1. Make a copy of the ZIP file if it is an original archive or backup.
  2. Extract it with the operating system: right-click the file and choose Extract all in Windows, double-click it in macOS, or use an archive manager in Linux.
  3. Open the extracted folder and locate files ending in .png. Preserve the folder structure if filenames repeat.
  4. Open or upload the extracted PNG files in the application that requires them. No image conversion is necessary.

For command-line extraction, use unzip archive.zip -d extracted on Linux or macOS. With 7-Zip, use 7z x archive.zip -oextracted. These commands decompress the archive without changing the image data.

When the archive contains JPEG, WebP, SVG, or other images

  1. Extract the ZIP as described above.
  2. Open the source image in an image editor such as GIMP, Paint.NET, Photoshop, or an SVG-capable editor such as Inkscape.
  3. Choose File → Export or File → Export As, select PNG, set the required pixel dimensions and transparency options, and save the result with a .png extension.
  4. Repeat the process for each image, or use the editor's batch-processing feature for a large collection.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the ZIP if the converter accepts archive input, select the supported image or output option, and download the resulting PNG. An archive containing several unrelated files may require separate extraction because one PNG cannot represent every file in the archive.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Extracting a PNG from ZIP does not reduce quality because ZIP compression is lossless. If a source image must be converted to PNG, choose the original pixel dimensions; increasing dimensions only interpolates pixels and cannot create missing detail.

Check the extracted filename and file signature rather than relying only on the extension. A valid PNG normally begins with the signature 89 50 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A; renaming a JPEG or another file to .png does not convert it.

Password-protected or damaged ZIP archives must be unlocked or repaired before extraction. Encrypted archives may also prevent an online converter from reading their contents. PNG supports transparency, but some applications remove the alpha channel or replace transparent pixels with a background color when importing or exporting.
