A RAR archive may contain PNG images that a photo editor, web page, or device cannot open until the archive is unpacked. The practical conversion is usually extraction: retrieve the PNG files from the RAR rather than re-encoding the archive itself.

What the RAR format is

RAR is a compressed archive format identified by .rar. WinRAR commonly creates RAR archives; 7-Zip, WinRAR, PeaZip, and command-line tools can extract them. RAR files are used for distributing groups of files, reducing transfer size, splitting large archives into numbered volumes, and optionally protecting contents with passwords or recovery records.

A RAR file does not have image properties and cannot itself become a PNG image. It is a container that may hold one PNG, several PNG files, or unrelated files.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format designed for screenshots, diagrams, interface graphics, logos, and images requiring transparency. It supports alpha transparency and preserves pixel data without the generation loss associated with repeated JPEG encoding.

PNG is suitable when an editor, browser workflow, publishing system, or device requires an image file rather than an archive. It is usually larger than JPEG for photographic images because PNG uses lossless compression.

How to actually convert RAR to PNG

Extract the PNG files with desktop software

  1. Install 7-Zip or WinRAR and make sure every part of a split archive is in the same folder.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click archive.rar and choose 7-Zip → Extract to "archive\" or the equivalent WinRAR extraction command.
  3. For a command-line extraction with 7-Zip, run 7z x archive.rar -oextracted. Start with the first volume, such as archive.part1.rar; the program reads the remaining volumes automatically.
  4. Open the extraction folder and locate files ending in .png. Those files are already PNGs and need no further conversion.

If the archive contains JPG, TIFF, or another image format instead, extract those files first and convert them separately with an image editor or ImageMagick, for example magick input.jpg output.png. This re-encodes the image; it is not an archive extraction.

Use the online converter

On 101convert.com, choose the RAR-to-PNG conversion, upload the archive, and download the resulting PNG file or files. This requires no installed software, but uploading is unsuitable for confidential archives. The result depends on the archive contents: an archive containing several images may produce multiple outputs, while an archive containing no compatible image cannot produce a meaningful PNG.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Extracting an existing PNG does not reduce its quality because the image bytes are not re-encoded. Converting a JPEG or other source image to PNG does not restore detail already lost through earlier compression, although subsequent PNG saves preserve the converted pixels.

Password-protected archives require the password, and incomplete or damaged multi-volume archives cannot be fully extracted. RAR files containing documents, video, or other non-image data cannot be converted meaningfully to PNG; they must first contain, or be rendered into, raster image content.
