Convert RAR to AVI

A legacy media player, editing application, or hardware device may require AVI while the video is stored inside a RAR archive. Usually this requires extracting the video first and converting it only when its original container or codecs are incompatible.

What the RAR format is

RAR is a compressed archive format developed by Eugene Roshal and commonly created with WinRAR, 7-Zip, and command-line archive tools. It stores one or more files in a container for compression, multi-file distribution, password encryption, and optional recovery data.

Video downloads, backups, and software distributions often use RAR archives because large data can be split into parts such as video.part1.rar, video.part2.rar, or the older sequence video.rar, video.r00, and video.r01. RAR does not specify the format or codec of an enclosed video; the archive may contain AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, or another file type.

What the AVI format is

AVI, or Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container introduced by Microsoft. It can store video and audio encoded with codecs such as MPEG-4 Part 2, Motion JPEG, DV, uncompressed video, and several others.

AVI remains useful with older Windows software, capture systems, industrial equipment, and media players that expect an .avi file. Its simple container structure and support for low-compression or uncompressed video can also suit some editing and capture workflows. AVI has limited support for features common in newer containers, including variable-frame-rate video, embedded subtitles, chapters, and advanced metadata.

The .avi extension does not guarantee playback. The receiving program or device must support the specific video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, and bitrate inside the file.

Extract the video from the RAR archive

1. Install 7-Zip on Windows, or use UnRAR, The Unarchiver, or a compatible archive utility on macOS or Linux.
2. Place every part of a split archive in the same folder. Open the first part, normally video.part1.rar or video.rar; do not extract each part separately.
3. In 7-Zip, choose 7-Zip → Extract Here or 7-Zip → Extract to “video\”. Supply the password if the archive is encrypted.
4. Check the extracted filename and inspect its actual format. If it is already an AVI file with codecs supported by the destination, no conversion is needed. Changing an MP4 or MKV filename to end in .avi does not convert it.

With the UnRAR command-line utility, extract the first part with:

unrar x video.part1.rar extracted_video/

Convert the extracted video with FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides direct control over the AVI container and its streams. Install it from FFmpeg.org or a trusted operating-system package manager, then run:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.avi

This creates an AVI containing MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio, a combination accepted by many older applications and devices. Replace input.mp4 with the extracted filename; FFmpeg can also read formats such as MKV and MOV. Builds without the optional libmp3lame encoder require another audio setting, such as -c:a pcm_s16le; PCM audio is widely compatible but creates much larger files.

For hardware with documented requirements, set the required frame rate, dimensions, and audio parameters instead of guessing:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -r 25 -vf scale=720:576 -c:a libmp3lame -ar 48000 -b:a 192k output.avi

Use the device manual for values such as 25 frames per second and 720:576; those values are not suitable for every source. Run ffprobe input.mp4 to inspect the source streams before conversion. With FFmpeg's MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder, lower -q:v values generally produce higher quality and larger files.

Use graphical or online converters

VLC media player can perform a basic conversion through Media → Convert/Save → Add → Convert/Save. Select an AVI profile, choose a destination ending in .avi, and verify the profile's video and audio codecs. VLC exposes fewer codec and compatibility controls than FFmpeg.

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert the extracted video when they list its input format and AVI as an output format. Most online converters do not treat a RAR archive as a video input, so extraction must occur first. Upload only material that is appropriate for a third-party service, and check its retention and deletion policy before sending private or copyrighted files.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting the extracted video normally decodes and re-encodes it, causing some quality loss. If the source is already AVI and its streams are compatible, extraction preserves the original data and is preferable to transcoding.

AVI is generally less space-efficient than MP4 or MKV, especially with uncompressed or lightly compressed video. Although AVI can technically contain H.264 video, many older players do not support that combination reliably; MPEG-4 Part 2, Motion JPEG, or PCM audio may be required by the target device.

A conversion that plays on a computer can still fail on hardware because of an unsupported codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, bitrate, or file-size limit. RAR extraction errors usually indicate a missing part, an incorrect password, or archive corruption rather than a video-conversion error. Keep the original archive until the extracted file opens and the AVI has been tested on its intended device.
