A service, device, or download system may require a large RAR archive to be delivered as numbered parts such as .001, .002, and .003. This operation splits the RAR file rather than converting it into a separate archive format; joining the parts recreates the original RAR byte for byte.
What the RAR format is
RAR is a proprietary compressed archive format associated with WinRAR. It stores one or more files with compression, directory information, optional encryption, and optional recovery records. RAR is used for software distributions, backups, downloads, and collections of files that need to be compressed into one container.
RAR archives may be single files such as archive.rar or native multipart archives such as archive.part1.rar, archive.part2.rar, and later volumes. Extraction tools including WinRAR, 7-Zip, PeaZip, and The Unarchiver can read many RAR archives; support for creating RAR files is more limited because the format is proprietary.
What the 001 format is
.001 normally identifies the first segment in a numbered split-file set. It is not a universal compression or archive format: the extension does not describe how the data inside the segment is structured.
A file named archive.rar.001 contains the first portion of a RAR file. A file named archive.001 may contain the first portion of a RAR, video, disk image, document, or any other file. HJSplit and similar utilities create generic parts that are restored by joining every segment in numeric order.
Numbered parts can fit upload, attachment, filesystem, or removable-media size limits. They do not reduce the total size, add compression, or provide a usable archive unless all parts are joined. A missing or damaged segment prevents reliable reconstruction.
How to split a RAR file into 001 parts
Use HJSplit for generic numbered parts
- Keep the original RAR unchanged and make a backup if the data is important.
- Install HJSplit from its official website, or use another trusted file-splitting utility that explicitly creates numeric extensions.
- Open HJSplit and choose Split.
- Select
archive.rar, specify a part size accepted by the destination, and start the operation. Depending on the utility, the output may be namedarchive.rar.001orarchive.001. - Keep every generated part together and preserve its numeric suffix. Rename the base only when the receiving software requires a specific name; do not change the contents or sequence.
To restore the archive, place all parts in one directory, open HJSplit, choose Join, and select the first segment. The resulting file should be opened as a RAR with WinRAR or 7-Zip. If the reconstructed filename lacks the .rar extension, append that extension without modifying the file contents.
Extract the contents before splitting
Use this method when the recipient requires parts of an extracted file rather than parts of the RAR container.
- Install 7-Zip or another RAR extractor. For a native multipart RAR, place all volumes in one directory and open only the first volume, such as
archive.part1.rar. - Choose 7-Zip → Extract to and identify the file that must be divided.
- Open HJSplit, choose Split, select the extracted file, and set the required segment size.
- Send every generated segment, including the
.001file. The recipient must use Join to recreate the extracted file before opening it.
Do not extract and split the contents when the destination expects the original RAR archive. The two procedures produce different data and require different joining steps.
Create archive volumes with 7-Zip
7-Zip can create compressed multipart 7z archives when the receiving application accepts 7-Zip volumes. Select the files, choose 7-Zip → Add to archive, select 7z as the archive format, and enter a value such as 1000M in Split to volumes, bytes. The output normally resembles archive.7z.001, not a generic archive.001 set.
These volumes retain archive metadata and compression, but they are not HJSplit segments and cannot be joined with HJSplit. Use this option only when the recipient can open 7-Zip multipart archives.
Compatibility and integrity limits
Splitting and joining are lossless: a correctly joined file is byte-for-byte identical to the source. The operation does not recompress the RAR, change its contents, remove encryption, or convert it to a native format defined by .001, because no such universal format exists.
Do not omit, reorder, or independently rename parts. If integrity matters, calculate a SHA-256 checksum of the original RAR and compare it with the checksum of the joined file. A matching checksum confirms that the split-and-join process reproduced the source.
Online archive converters such as CloudConvert, Zamzar, and Convertio generally convert or extract archive formats; they do not normally create HJSplit-compatible numbered segments. Use desktop software for this operation. An online file-splitting service is suitable only if its documentation explicitly states that it produces the exact required .001 sequence, and only when uploading the RAR does not expose confidential data.
