Convert MP4 to PLS

Converting MPEG-4 video files directly to PLS playlist files (.mp4 to .pls) is not possible in the usual sense, because these formats serve different purposes. An .mp4 file contains audio and video data, while a .pls file is a text-based playlist that points to media files.

There is no meaningful file conversion from .mp4 to .pls with a converter, because a playlist does not store or encode the video itself. So if you see a tool claiming to convert MP4 to PLS, it is likely only creating a playlist entry, not converting the media.

How a pls file works

A PLS file is a plain text playlist format commonly used by media players and streaming software. It usually contains file paths or URLs, plus track numbers and optional metadata such as titles and lengths. It does not embed the media content.

How to create one

If you want to use an MP4 in a playlist, open a media player or playlist editor that supports .pls, add the .mp4 file, then save or export the playlist. Typical menu paths may look like File → New playlist, File → Add file, or File → Save playlist. Some programs can export directly to .pls.

You can also reference a network location or URL if the player supports it.

Important note

If your goal is to make a video playable on a specific device or app, check whether that software supports MP4 playback directly. If it only accepts playlists, create a .pls file that references the MP4 file path or URL. If you need to change the actual video format, you would need to convert .mp4 to another video format, not to .pls.
