Convert PSD to MP4

A Photoshop composition must become a playable file when a phone, website, social platform, presentation, or video editor cannot use a layered PSD. Exporting to MP4 also produces a smaller, shareable delivery file, but it removes Photoshop’s editable structure.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native document format. It can store layers, masks, editable text, adjustment layers, paths, transparency, smart objects, and other data that flattened image formats do not preserve.

Photoshop users create PSD files for illustrations, advertising artwork, UI mockups, retouching, album covers, and compositing. A PSD is normally a still image, although it can contain a Photoshop Timeline, video layers, and audio for basic animation. Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro can import PSD files either as flattened artwork or as separate layers.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container, commonly containing H.264 video and AAC audio. It is supported by web browsers, phones, televisions, media players, video editors, and most social platforms.

MP4 is appropriate for animated graphics, slideshows, tutorials, advertisements, and other finished video. H.264 produces substantially smaller files than uncompressed video, but MP4 does not retain PSD layers, editable text, masks, smart objects, or Photoshop timelines.

How to convert an animated PSD in Photoshop

1. Save a working copy with File → Save As, keeping the original .psd separately.
2. Open Window → Timeline. Choose Create Video Timeline for keyframed layer movement, opacity, and position, or Create Frame Animation for separate still frames.
3. Set layer visibility, keyframes, frame delays, clip duration, and the timeline frame rate. Use the destination project’s frame rate; 24, 25, and 30 fps are common delivery values.
4. Set the document canvas to the intended output dimensions before rendering. Add a solid background if the artwork contains transparency.
5. Choose File → Export → Render Video. Select an H.264 or MP4 output if the installed Photoshop version offers it, set the filename and destination, and choose a preset matching the required dimensions and frame rate.
6. Open the rendered .mp4 in the target player or editor and inspect text, edges, timing, and audio before delivery.

Photoshop is suitable for simple layer-based animation and basic video layers. Its video features are not a replacement for a full editor: use After Effects for complex effects, expressions, 3D layers, or detailed compositing. Import the PSD with File → Import → File, choose Composition and Retain Layer Sizes, then send the composition to Adobe Media Encoder or the After Effects render queue and select H.264 for MP4 output.

How to convert a static PSD

A static PSD has no motion to encode. In Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or After Effects, import the PSD, set its screen duration, add optional transitions or audio, and export with an H.264 preset. This preserves more control than a direct file-conversion service.

For a simple fixed-duration video, first flatten the artwork with File → Export → Export As and choose PNG or JPEG. PNG preserves transparency in the intermediate file, although ordinary H.264 MP4 output still needs an opaque background; JPEG is smaller but discards transparency and may introduce compression artifacts.

FFmpeg can create a five-second, silent MP4 from a flattened image:

For a 1920×1080 file that preserves the image’s aspect ratio, use:

Replace 5 with the required duration. These commands create no motion and no audio; use a video editor when the result needs zooms, transitions, music, narration, or synchronized timing. The output dimensions should be even when using yuv420p.

Online conversion options

Services such as Convertio, Zamzar, and CloudConvert may offer PSD-to-video conversion or related image-to-video workflows, but availability, duration limits, animation support, and output controls vary. Many services flatten the PSD and produce a short video from one rendered image rather than interpreting Photoshop layers or Timeline keyframes.

Before uploading, verify the service’s supported input, duration, frame rate, dimensions, audio handling, and maximum file size. Do not upload confidential client artwork, unreleased designs, or personal information to a third-party service; use Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Resolve, or FFmpeg for local processing.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Keep the original .psd; MP4 is a delivery file and cannot restore Photoshop editability.
• Standard H.264 MP4 normally has no alpha channel. Composite transparent areas against the intended background before export. Use a format and workflow that explicitly supports alpha if transparency is required during editing.
• Use H.264 with yuv420p for broad playback compatibility and +faststart when the file will be streamed from a web server.
• Match the source timeline’s frame rate to the destination. Converting between 24, 25, and 30 fps can duplicate, drop, or retime frames.
• Export at the intended delivery dimensions. Upscaling a small PSD softens text and edges; very large canvases increase rendering time and file size.
• Inspect thin lines, small text, gradients, and high-contrast edges at the final MP4 resolution. Video compression and chroma subsampling can reduce their clarity.
• Photoshop’s Timeline can handle basic video layers and audio, but complex editing, effects, and audio mixing belong in a dedicated video application.
