How to convert psd to psdx file

Source format

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native layered image format. It is widely used for editing complex images with layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, and effects. PSD is the standard working format for many Photoshop-based workflows because it preserves editable content and high-quality image data.

Target format

PSDX is not a standard Photoshop file format. In most cases, people who mention .psdx are referring to a format used by a specific app or a mistaken filename extension, not a general-purpose Adobe interchange format. Adobe’s tablet-era workflow for Photoshop Touch did not require converting PSD files to PSDX just to open them. Instead, PSD files could be synced through Creative Cloud and opened in the mobile app, although some content could be flattened or simplified depending on the app and device.

If your destination software truly expects .psdx, the conversion method depends entirely on that software’s own import and export support. There is no universal PSD-to-PSDX conversion standard in Adobe Photoshop.

How to handle the file

Best desktop option: Adobe Photoshop

  1. Open the .psd file in Adobe Photoshop.
  2. Check the documentation for the target app to confirm whether it really requires .psdx.
  3. If the target app supports PSD directly, export or save in PSD instead of forcing a conversion.
  4. If the target app requires another format, use File → Save As or File → Export and choose the supported format, such as PSD, PSB, TIFF, PNG, or PDF.
  5. Open the exported file in the destination software and verify that layers, transparency, and color profiles were preserved as needed.

Alternative desktop tools

Editors such as Affinity Photo, GIMP, and Photopea can open many PSD files, but they generally do not provide native PSD-to-PSDX conversion. They are useful if you need to edit the PSD first or export it to a more widely supported format.

Online converters

Reputable online converters usually support PSD to common formats like PNG, JPG, TIFF, or PDF. Direct PSD to PSDX conversion is uncommon, so be cautious with any website claiming to offer it. Only use such a service if you have confirmed that the output is accepted by your target application and you are comfortable uploading the file.

Compatibility and limitations

The main limitation is that PSDX is not broadly standardized, so direct conversion from PSD may not be possible in general-purpose software. Even when a workflow exists, features such as layers, layer styles, smart objects, text editing, and color management may not transfer perfectly. If the receiving app only needs a flattened image, exporting to PNG or TIFF is usually safer and more compatible.

For best results, keep the original PSD as your master file and create a separate export in the exact format required by the receiving application. If you must deliver .psdx, confirm the file specification with the software vendor first, because the correct method depends on that program’s supported file types.
