Convert PSD to CRD

A program that requires a .crd file usually needs a card database or application-specific document, not a Photoshop image. Identify that program first; if .cdr was intended, the target is a CorelDRAW graphics file and the conversion procedure is different.

What the PSD format is

.psd is Adobe Photoshop’s native document format. It can preserve layers, masks, editable text, paths, adjustment layers, transparency, color profiles, smart objects, and other project data.

Photoshop creates PSD files, while applications such as GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Photopea can open many PSD documents. PSD is used for layered artwork that must remain editable during design, retouching, print preparation, or archival.

What the CRD format is

.crd is not a standard image format. Its best-known use is the Windows Cardfile database format, which stores card records containing text and, in some implementations, embedded images. Other applications also use .crd for proprietary data, so the extension alone cannot determine the required conversion.

For a Cardfile-style database, the format’s advantages are record-based storage, card-by-card organization, and application-specific searching or retrieval. It does not provide Photoshop-style layers, filters, editable text, or image compositing. There is no general PSD-to-CRD image conversion and no universal CRD specification.

How to handle a PSD for a CRD application

1. Identify the target software. In Windows, right-click an existing .crd file, choose Open with, and note the application that opens it. Check that application’s documentation for image insertion, card creation, import, and export functions. Modern Windows versions do not normally include the original Cardfile program.
2. Make a raster copy of the PSD in Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, or Photopea. Use File → Export or the equivalent command. Choose PNG when transparency and lossless quality are required, or JPEG when the image is opaque and a smaller file is more useful. Set the pixel dimensions and resolution required by the target application.
3. Open the target card-database application, create a card, and use its image insertion or paste command if available. Save the database with that application’s own save function. This embeds or attaches an image to a record; it does not convert the PSD into a graphics-equivalent CRD file.

Photopea can export a PSD to PNG or JPEG in a browser. CloudConvert and similar established services can also convert PSD to common raster formats, but they do not provide a general-purpose PSD-to-CRD conversion. Do not upload confidential artwork unless the service’s storage, retention, and privacy terms are acceptable. Desktop software is preferable for sensitive files or large PSDs.

If the intended target is CDR

.cdr is CorelDRAW’s native drawing format. Unlike CRD, it is a graphics document that can contain vector objects, text, and placed bitmap images.

1. Open CorelDRAW and choose File → Import.
2. Select the PSD and configure the import options, including resolution, color mode, and transparency when those options are available.
3. Place the imported artwork, then choose File → Save as and select the CorelDRAW format.

CorelDRAW’s PSD import behavior varies by version and by the contents of the file. Imported Photoshop artwork is commonly treated as a bitmap or partially flattened object; layers, adjustment layers, smart objects, effects, and editable Photoshop text may not remain independently editable. If editable vector artwork is required, export suitable paths or vector elements separately and rebuild unsupported effects in CorelDRAW.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG preserves pixel data and transparency but does not preserve PSD structure. JPEG removes transparency and applies lossy compression, so it is unsuitable when clean edges, repeated editing, or text quality matter.

Cardfile implementations differ in image support, record-size limits, character encoding, and database compatibility. A CRD saved by one application may not open in another. Keep the original PSD, the exported raster image, and the target application’s native database separately.
