Programs and devices that accept only MP4 cannot use a TAR.GZ archive directly. The archive must first be extracted, then any video inside it must be copied into an MP4 container or re-encoded into MP4-compatible streams.
What the TAR.GZ format is
TAR.GZ is a TAR archive compressed with Gzip. TAR stores multiple files and directories together; Gzip reduces the size of that TAR stream but does not convert the contents into video.
Linux and Unix command-line tools commonly create TAR.GZ files with tar and gzip. You may encounter them in software source packages, server backups, application distributions, log archives, and collections of media files. A TAR.GZ file can contain an MP4, but it can also contain documents, images, executables, or another archive.
What the MP4 format is
MP4 is a multimedia container, usually identified by the .mp4 extension. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata; common compatible combinations include H.264 video with AAC audio.
MP4 is supported by web browsers, phones, televisions, editing software, media players, and social platforms. You would use it when a device or application requires a widely supported video file, when you need to edit or share extracted video, or when the source video must be re-encoded for a smaller file or broader compatibility.
How to actually convert TAR.GZ to MP4
1. Extract the archive
On Linux or macOS, create an output directory and extract the archive with:
mkdir extractedtar -xzf archive.tar.gz -C extracted
On Windows, use 7-Zip or another archive utility to open archive.tar.gz. Extract the Gzip layer first if the program does not unpack both layers automatically, then extract the resulting .tar file.
2. Identify the actual video
Inspect the extracted files rather than assuming that the archive itself is a video. Look for video extensions such as .mkv, .webm, .avi, .mov, or .mp4. If a file has no extension, identify it with:
file extracted/path/to/file
Use FFmpeg's probe utility for media details:
ffprobe extracted/path/to/video
If the archive contains several videos, convert each one separately or combine them only after checking that their resolution, frame rate, and stream layout are suitable.
3. Create the MP4
Install FFmpeg, then re-encode a source video with H.264 video and AAC audio:
ffmpeg -i extracted/path/to/input.mkv -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
-crf 20 provides high visual quality; increase the value for a smaller file and decrease it for higher quality. The -preset setting changes encoding speed and file size, not the target format.
If the source already contains MP4-compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, avoid quality loss by remuxing instead of re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i extracted/path/to/input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy output.mp4
Remuxing is fast, but it fails or produces limited compatibility when the source codecs or subtitle tracks are not suitable for MP4. In that case, use the re-encoding command.
For a no-installation option, you can convert the file on 101convert.com for free. The archive still has to contain a detectable video stream; an archive of documents or other non-video files cannot produce a meaningful MP4.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Extracting a TAR.GZ file does not change the quality of its contents. Re-encoding changes quality because the video is decoded and compressed again; remuxing preserves the original audio and video streams.
MP4 support depends on codecs, not only the filename. H.264 video with AAC audio is generally the safest choice for consumer devices. Some MP4 players do not support unusual audio codecs, variable subtitle formats, edit lists, or advanced video profiles.
A TAR.GZ archive may contain no video, multiple videos, encrypted files, or a video format that FFmpeg cannot decode. Renaming archive.tar.gz to archive.mp4 does not convert it and will make the file unreadable to both archive tools and media players.
