A TAR.GZ file normally contains one or more files, while PNG is an image format. The practical conversion is usually to extract a PNG stored inside the archive; if the archive contains JPEG, SVG, or another format, that image must be converted separately after extraction.
What the TAR.GZ format is
TAR.GZ combines two operations: TAR bundles files and directories without compressing them, then Gzip compresses the TAR bundle. The result commonly uses .tar.gz or .tgz.
GNU tar and BSD tar create TAR.GZ archives on Linux and macOS. 7-Zip, backup tools, Unix package systems, software source distributions, and server export utilities also commonly produce them. You may encounter TAR.GZ files containing application source code, website files, datasets, backups, or collections of images.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a lossless raster image format used for screenshots, diagrams, logos, interface graphics, and images requiring transparency. It supports an alpha channel and preserves exact pixel values, but usually produces larger files than JPEG for photographic content.
A TAR.GZ archive is not itself a PNG image. Renaming archive.tar.gz to image.png does not change its format and will not make image software open it.
How to actually convert TAR.GZ to PNG
Extract a PNG with desktop software
- Open the archive with 7-Zip, The Unarchiver, or another TAR.GZ-capable archive utility.
- Choose Extract or Extract to, then select a destination folder.
- Open the extracted folder and locate files ending in
.png. Each one is already a PNG and needs no further conversion.
You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. For archives containing multiple files, inspect the archive contents and extract the required PNG rather than treating the whole archive as one image.
Extract from a terminal
On Linux or macOS, run:
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz -C extracted-files
Replace archive.tar.gz with the actual filename. The PNG files will be placed under extracted-files, possibly in subdirectories retained from the archive.
To list contents before extraction, run:
tar -tzf archive.tar.gz
On Windows, 7-Zip can extract the Gzip layer and the TAR layer through its context menu. With a current 7-Zip installation, selecting 7-Zip → Extract Here normally handles both layers.
Convert an extracted non-PNG image
If extraction produces a JPEG, TIFF, or another supported image instead of a PNG, use an image editor or ImageMagick. For example:
magick input.jpg output.png
For SVG input, rasterization settings such as output width, height, and background transparency may affect the result. A document, source file, or arbitrary binary extracted from the archive cannot be meaningfully converted to PNG without rendering it as an image first.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Extracting an existing PNG does not reduce its quality because no image re-encoding occurs. Converting another image to PNG preserves quality only when the source and conversion software support the required color depth, transparency, and dimensions.
Use tar -tzf or an archive utility's file list to verify the archive before extraction. TAR.GZ archives can contain nested directories, duplicate filenames, symbolic links, or files with unsafe names; extract untrusted archives into a separate folder and avoid running extracted programs or scripts.
