A video editor, presentation system, social platform, or media player may require an MP4 instead of a still PNG. Converting the image creates a video with a defined duration and encoding, while converting a numbered image sequence creates an animation or time-lapse.
What the PNG format is
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format used for screenshots, web graphics, illustrations, logos, and images requiring lossless compression or transparency. Photoshop, GIMP, Illustrator, browsers, screenshot utilities, and operating systems can create or export PNG files. A PNG stores pixels, not a timeline, frame rate, duration, or audio track.
What the MP4 format is
MP4 is a multimedia container, commonly containing H.264 video with AAC audio. Phones, browsers, televisions, editing software, presentation applications, and social platforms widely support this combination. MP4 is appropriate when a service requires a video upload, an image must remain visible for a specified time, or several PNG frames must become an animation.
H.264 MP4 normally does not preserve PNG transparency. An MP4 made from one PNG is a static video unless motion, additional frames, or audio is added.
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it from the official FFmpeg site or the package manager for your operating system, place input.png in a working folder, open a terminal there, and run:
ffmpeg -loop 1 -i input.png -t 5 -r 30 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart output.mp4This creates a five-second video at 30 frames per second. Replace 5 with the required duration and change the input and output filenames. yuv420p provides broad player and web-service compatibility; +faststart moves MP4 metadata near the beginning for faster progressive playback.
For a numbered sequence such as frame_0001.png, frame_0002.png, and so on, run:
ffmpeg -framerate 30 -i frame_%04d.png -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart output.mp4Change 30 to the intended input frame rate. The %04d pattern represents four-digit numbering; use %03d for names such as frame_001.png. Keep the numbering consecutive, because a missing file can stop image-sequence processing. For irregular filenames, create an FFmpeg input list instead.
To include an audio file, add it as a second input and stop when the shorter stream ends:
ffmpeg -loop 1 -i input.png -i audio.mp3 -t 5 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -shortest -movflags +faststart output.mp4The -t 5 value must accommodate the intended image and audio duration; omit it when the audio should determine the length.
Using a desktop editor
Shotcut provides a graphical workflow. Open the PNG with File → Open File, drag it to the timeline, extend the still-image clip to the required duration, and choose an H.264 export preset under Export. Confirm that the output filename ends in .mp4, then export the file. Add audio on a separate timeline track when needed.
For multiple PNGs, import them as an image sequence if the installed editor version supports that function, or create the sequence with FFmpeg first and then edit the resulting MP4. Other desktop editors, including DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro, can place still images on a timeline and export H.264 video.
Using an online converter
CloudConvert and Convertio offer browser-based image-to-video conversion when their current service supports the requested PNG input and MP4 output. Upload the image, select MP4, set the duration and frame rate if those controls are available, and download the result. Online tools are unsuitable for confidential images, large sequences, or jobs requiring predictable codec settings because the file is uploaded to a third-party service and available options can change.
Quality and compatibility limits
H.264 is lossy, so the MP4 does not retain PNG's pixel-for-pixel lossless quality. With FFmpeg, -crf 18 generally gives higher quality and a larger file than the default CRF near 23; lower CRF values increase quality and size. The appropriate setting also depends on the image content and delivery platform.
H.264 with yuv420p requires even video dimensions. If the PNG has odd dimensions, pad it rather than crop it:
ffmpeg -loop 1 -i input.png -t 5 -vf "pad=ceil(iw/2)*2:ceil(ih/2)*2" -r 30 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p output.mp4Transparent PNG areas must be composited over a chosen background before export if their appearance matters. The standard MP4/H.264 workflow usually replaces the alpha channel with an opaque background. PNG metadata, layers, and editable vector information are not carried into the video.
