A legacy word-processing file may need conversion when a script, database import, editor, or archive accepts only plain text. Saving it as .txt removes layout data and creates a smaller file that opens on almost any operating system.

What the WPS format is

.wps is an ambiguous extension. It most commonly identifies documents created by Microsoft Works Word Processor, particularly Works 6.0–9.0, but older WPS Office and Kingsoft Writer versions also used it. A Works file can contain formatted paragraphs, tables, images, headers, footers, and embedded objects.

These files are usually found in personal archives, old Windows backups, email attachments, and legacy office systems. The extension does not identify the originating application with certainty, so the correct conversion method depends on the file variant.

What the TXT format is

.txt contains character data without fonts, page layout, colors, images, tables, headers, footers, or embedded objects. It works well for logs, notes, source data, command-line tools, search indexing, database imports, and long-term storage of readable text.

TXT files are small and supported by operating systems, terminals, text editors, and import utilities. TXT has no universal built-in encoding requirement, so the chosen encoding—normally UTF-8—must match the program that will read the file.

How to convert the file

Use 101convert.com

1. Open the WPS-to-TXT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the .wps file from your computer.
3. Choose TXT as the output format if it is not selected automatically.
4. Start the conversion and download the generated file.
5. Open the result in a UTF-8-capable editor and check accented characters, line breaks, tables, and important sections.

Use LibreOffice Writer

1. Open LibreOffice Writer and select File → Open.
2. Choose the WPS file. If Writer cannot read it, the file may use an unsupported Works or WPS Office variant.
3. Select File → Save As and choose Text (.txt) or Text - Choose Encoding (.txt).
4. In the encoding dialog, select UTF-8. Choose the required line ending: LF is standard for Unix and Linux tools, while some older Windows programs require CRLF.
5. Save the file, close it, and reopen it to verify the extracted text.

For a recognized file, LibreOffice can also convert from a terminal:

The command depends on LibreOffice having a filter for that specific WPS variant. For a file created by WPS Office or Kingsoft Writer, the matching application may preserve more text structure; open the file there and use File → Save As when available.

Quality and compatibility limits

• TXT preserves character content rather than appearance. Tables may become lines of text, columns may lose alignment, and images, drawings, and other embedded objects are omitted.
• Headers, footers, footnotes, text boxes, fields, comments, and tracked changes may be flattened, reordered, or discarded.
• If accented characters become garbled or appear as replacement symbols, export again with the correct source and output encoding. Renaming a file to .txt does not convert its content or repair encoding.
• Password-protected, damaged, or very old Microsoft Works files may require the original Works-compatible software or a specialist recovery tool before they can be exported.
• Compare the converted text with the source when page order, table data, non-Latin characters, or document completeness matters.
