Older Microsoft Works documents can block editing when a recipient, records system, or current word processor requires a .docx file. Converting preserves the document in a format used by Microsoft Word and most current office suites.

What a WPS file is

The .wps extension is most commonly associated with Microsoft Works Word Processor, part of the consumer Microsoft Works suite. Works was discontinued in 2009, and its document format is now legacy software data.

A .wps extension can also be associated with WPS Office or other software, so identify the file's source where possible. A file created by Microsoft Works may require a different import filter than a document created by WPS Office.

What DOCX provides

.docx is the default Microsoft Word document format introduced with Office 2007. It uses the Office Open XML standard: a ZIP-based package containing XML text, formatting, images, relationships, and metadata.

DOCX supports editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, and tracked changes. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WPS Office, and many document-management systems can open DOCX files, although layout fidelity can vary between applications.

Convert the file

Microsoft Works used multiple WPS variants, and results depend on the version that created the file. Plain text, paragraphs, basic character formatting, and simple tables usually convert most accurately.

Complex page layouts, unavailable fonts, old clip art, embedded objects, fields, custom forms, macros, and unusual table formatting can change, be omitted, or become static content. Font substitution can alter line wrapping and page count.

Keep the original .wps file until the converted DOCX has been reviewed. If conversion fails, confirm that the file is actually a Microsoft Works document rather than a WPS Office file or another format using the same extension.
