Convert DOCX to PAGES

A DOCX file may need conversion when a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple workflow requires an editable Pages document rather than a Word file. Importing it into Pages creates a native .pages copy, but the conversion can alter complex layouts.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is the XML-based word-processing format used by Microsoft Word since Office 2007. Microsoft Word, Microsoft 365, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs exports, and document-management systems commonly create it.

A DOCX file can contain formatted text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, tracked changes, fields, equations, and embedded media. It is supported by applications on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web, making it the usual exchange format for editable documents.

What the PAGES format is

.pages is the native document format of Apple Pages. Pages creates editable reports, letters, résumés, newsletters, brochures, and page-layout documents in this format on macOS, iPhone, iPad, and Pages for iCloud.

Pages preserves its own templates, layout objects, shapes, charts, tables, and text styling more accurately than a DOCX round trip. A converted DOCX does not gain the original Pages template or Apple-specific objects; those features apply to documents created or edited in Pages.

A .pages document is less convenient for recipients who do not use Apple software. Export a copy as DOCX for further editing in Word or as PDF for fixed visual presentation.

How to convert a DOCX file to PAGES

Pages on macOS is the most reliable option because it performs the import and native save in the same application.

1. Open Pages and choose File → Open, then select the .docx file. Pages imports the Word document and may show a compatibility warning.
2. Review page breaks, fonts, paragraph styles, tables, images, headers, footers, footnotes, comments, and tracked changes.
3. Choose File → Save or File → Save As, if available, select a location, and save the document in Pages format. Use a new filename such as report-pages.pages to preserve the original DOCX.

Do not merely rename .docx to .pages. The extensions identify different file structures, and renaming does not convert the document.

Using Pages for iCloud

1. Sign in at icloud.com with an Apple Account and open Pages in a browser.
2. Upload the DOCX file through the document browser or drag it into the browser window.
3. Open the imported document and inspect its layout.
4. Use the document’s More menu, then Download a Copy → Pages, to download a .pages file.

Pages for iCloud requires an internet connection and sends the document to Apple’s service. Use the macOS application for confidential or regulated files when cloud processing is not permitted.

Using an online converter

Third-party services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert may accept DOCX files, but native PAGES output is not consistently offered. Use one only when its current conversion page explicitly lists PAGES as the output, then check that the downloaded file really ends in .pages and opens in Pages. A service that produces PDF, DOCX, ODT, or another format has not completed this conversion.

Online conversion uploads the source document to a third party. Do not submit confidential, personal, regulated, or commercially sensitive files unless the provider’s retention, deletion, and processing terms satisfy your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The import usually handles ordinary Word text, paragraph styles, images, tables, and basic page settings, but it is not lossless. Missing fonts can change line wrapping, pagination, and table dimensions; install the original fonts on the Mac when licensing permits.

Inspect documents containing tracked changes, comments, cross-references, equations, SmartArt, macros, embedded objects, content controls, section-specific headers, or advanced fields. Word macros do not run in Pages. Unsupported controls and fields may be removed, converted to static content, or replaced with approximate formatting, and revision information may not remain editable in the same way.

For exact visual reproduction, open the converted file, correct any layout changes, and choose File → Export To → PDF. Keep the original DOCX when later editing in Word, preserving tracked changes, macros, or other Word-specific features is required.
