A website, browser-based editor, or content-management system may require web markup instead of a Word document. Converting the file produces browser-readable HTML that can be published, edited with web tools, or stored with separate image assets.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is Microsoft Word’s XML-based document format. It is a ZIP package containing XML for text and structure, style definitions, images, metadata, and relationship files. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and other office suites create or export DOCX files for reports, letters, forms, contracts, and office correspondence.

What the HTML format is

.html is a text-based markup format interpreted by web browsers. Elements such as headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links, and images describe the document’s content and structure. HTML is easier to publish, inspect, and edit with web development tools, but it does not reproduce every page-oriented Word feature or print layout exactly.

Convert with Microsoft Word

1. Open the DOCX file in Word.
2. Select File → Save As or File → Save a Copy.
3. Choose Web Page, Filtered (*.htm; *.html) when available. This removes some Word-specific markup; Web Page (*.htm; *.html) retains more Word-specific information but usually produces less suitable web code.
4. Enter an output filename and select Save.
5. Keep the generated HTML file with any accompanying asset folder. Word commonly stores images and other resources in that folder rather than inside the HTML file.

Word’s HTML export can contain Microsoft-specific styles, excessive markup, and fixed dimensions. Use it for a quick export, then clean the markup and replace layout-specific formatting with CSS before publishing.

Convert with LibreOffice Writer

1. Open the DOCX file in LibreOffice Writer.
2. Select File → Save As.
3. Choose HTML Document (.html) or the equivalent HTML Writer format.
4. Set the output filename, select Save, and confirm any format prompt.
5. Open the result in a browser and keep its generated image or resource folder beside it.

LibreOffice can also run without its graphical interface:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to html --outdir output document.docx

Create output first if it does not exist. On systems where the executable is named differently, use soffice in place of libreoffice. The command writes an HTML file with the source document’s base name and may create accompanying resource files.

Check the converted files

Ordinary paragraphs, headings, lists, simple tables, and many inline images usually convert well. Review the result in the browser and verify heading structure, table widths, hyperlinks, image paths, special characters, non-Latin fonts, page breaks, and responsive behavior.

Floating objects, text boxes, columns, complex tables, headers, footers, fields, footnotes, tracked changes, comments, section breaks, and Word-specific positioning can change or disappear. Macros are not converted into executable HTML or JavaScript. A DOCX document’s print layout should therefore be treated as a source for reconstruction, not as a layout that HTML can reproduce exactly.

For website use, remove unnecessary office-generated styles, use semantic HTML elements, and move presentation rules into CSS. If images are referenced by relative paths, upload the asset folder with the HTML file; moving only the HTML file can produce broken images.
