Free online RTF to HTML converter

A legacy application, website, browser-based editor, or content-management system may require HTML instead of an RTF document. Converting the file makes its text and basic formatting available for web display, editing, publishing, or archiving without requiring an RTF-compatible word processor.

What the RTF format is

Rich Text Format stores text and formatting instructions as mostly readable text using control words and groups. It supports paragraphs, character styles, fonts, colors, lists, tables, and, depending on the application, embedded images and other objects.

Microsoft introduced RTF for exchanging formatted documents between word processors. Microsoft Word, WordPad, LibreOffice Writer, and document-management systems can create or open .rtf files. RTF is common in legacy desktop software, email attachments, legal and administrative records, and workflows that need basic formatting without a proprietary word-processing format.

RTF is not intended for browser rendering, responsive layouts, or direct website publishing. Its page-oriented features and application-specific extensions do not map exactly to HTML.

What the HTML format is

HTML describes document structure with elements such as <p>, <h1>, <table>, and <img>. Web browsers render HTML directly, and websites, content-management systems, email tools, and web editors can process it without an RTF reader.

HTML is appropriate when content must be published on a website, edited in a browser, indexed by search engines, or integrated into a web application. CSS can control presentation separately from the HTML, although converters often produce inline styles or a self-contained document with embedded styles.

Convert the file online

1. Open the RTF-to-HTML converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the source .rtf file from the computer or device.
3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
4. Download the generated .html file.
5. Open the file in a browser and inspect its text, lists, tables, links, and images.

This option requires no installed software and is free to use. Do not upload confidential or regulated documents unless the service's current privacy and retention terms are acceptable for that material.

Convert with LibreOffice

LibreOffice Writer provides a local conversion workflow when the document must be reviewed before export:

1. Open the .rtf file in LibreOffice Writer.
2. Choose File → Save As.
3. Select HTML Document (.html) as the file type and save it.
4. If LibreOffice asks which format to use, choose the HTML format rather than the native document format.
5. Open the resulting .html file in a browser and check the output.

For repeatable local conversions, a LibreOffice installation can run without its graphical interface:

The command normally writes output/input.html, using the source filename with an HTML extension. Batch conversions should still be checked because complex RTF layout may be interpreted differently by different applications.

Quality and compatibility limits

RTF and HTML use different layout models. Page breaks, headers and footers, floating objects, text boxes, tracked changes, comments, fields, unusual fonts, and proprietary Word features can be removed or changed. Exact print pagination is particularly unlikely to survive conversion.

Tables may need CSS changes for borders, widths, and narrow screens. An embedded image may become a separate image file referenced by the HTML rather than remaining inside one self-contained file. Keep that image directory with the HTML and preserve its relative paths when moving or publishing the result.

Check the converted file in at least one current browser. Verify character encoding, accented characters, links, list numbering, table borders, image loading, and font substitution. For broad compatibility, save or convert the HTML as UTF-8 where the tool provides an encoding option, use available web-safe fonts or web fonts, and replace unsupported fonts deliberately.

Conversion preserves content and approximate formatting, not the original document's full word-processor behavior. If the result will be published, revise the markup for semantic headings, meaningful lists, valid links, alternative text for images, and the site's CSS instead of relying on converter-generated inline styles.
