What the RTF format is

Rich Text Format stores text with basic formatting such as fonts, colors, paragraph alignment, lists, tables, and embedded images. Microsoft Word, WordPad, LibreOffice Writer, macOS TextEdit, and many legacy word processors can open or create .rtf files. RTF is used for office documents, email attachments, exported text, and file exchange between programs with different native formats.

RTF is more portable than many proprietary document formats, but it does not preserve every feature from modern word processors. Advanced layouts, unsupported fonts, fields, macros, comments, and some embedded objects may change when the file is opened or rendered.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, image viewers, social networks, and many upload forms. Its lossy compression usually produces smaller files than uncompressed images, making JPG practical for sharing pages as pictures.

JPG stores a visual snapshot rather than document content. It does not retain selectable text, hyperlinks, comments, page structure, or editability. Compression can blur small type and create halos around letters, so PNG or PDF is usually better when sharp text or document searching matters.

How to convert an RTF file to JPG

Convert it on 101convert.com

1. Open the RTF-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .rtf file and choose JPG as the output format if the format selector is provided.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated JPG file or files.
4. Inspect every page for missing fonts, changed line breaks, clipped tables, and unreadable small text before sharing the result.

A multipage document may produce one JPG per page because JPG has no standard multipage document structure. If the required result is one file containing all pages, use PDF instead.

Convert it with desktop software

For more control over pagination and resolution, first render the RTF as a PDF, then rasterize the PDF pages:

1. Open the file in LibreOffice Writer or Microsoft Word and verify page size, margins, page breaks, fonts, tables, and images.
2. In LibreOffice, use File → Export as PDF. In Word, use File → Save as or File → Export and select PDF. Save the result as document.pdf.
3. Install Poppler and run its pdftoppm utility at the required resolution. This example creates one JPG per page at 200 DPI:

4. Find the resulting files as page-1.jpg, page-2.jpg, and so on. Adjust the output prefix or rename the files as needed.

On Linux, LibreOffice can export the RTF to PDF without opening its graphical interface:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output document.rtf

Use the PDF-to-JPG step afterward. Exporting to PDF before rasterization usually preserves the word processor's page layout more reliably than taking screenshots or attempting an unsupported direct image export.

Quality and compatibility limits

Use about 200–300 DPI for ordinary page images. Choose a higher resolution for small print, detailed diagrams, or later cropping, but expect larger files. When a quality setting is available, JPG quality around 85–95 generally limits visible compression without making files unnecessarily large.

Install the fonts used by the RTF before opening or exporting it. If a font is unavailable, the replacement font can alter line wrapping, page breaks, spacing, and the position of images. Review tables and embedded graphics because unsupported RTF features may be omitted or repositioned.

Do not use a screenshot as the primary conversion method for a long or high-resolution document: it captures only the visible screen area and depends on display scaling. A PDF-rendering workflow or the 101convert.com converter produces page-sized output instead.
