Free online WORD to DOC converter

Some older Microsoft Word installations, document-management systems, and automated uploads accept only the legacy .doc format. Converting a newer Word document provides an editable file for that software without changing the original.

What the WORD format is

WORD is not one specific standardized file format or filename extension. It is often used as a generic category label for Microsoft Word documents, most commonly .docx files; a file named .word may also be accepted by some converters, but .word is not the normal extension for current Microsoft Word documents.

Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and other office applications can create or open Word documents. Check the actual filename extension and file properties before converting. Renaming .docx to .doc does not convert the file because the internal document format remains unchanged.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, associated mainly with Word 97–2003 and software that still requires those files. It stores editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, page settings, and other common word-processing content.

The main advantage of .doc is compatibility with older Word versions, document-management systems, and upload forms that reject .docx. It does not provide the newer format’s XML-based structure, generally produces less predictable results with modern features, and may create a larger file than .docx.

How to convert WORD to DOC

1. Keep a copy of the original file; conversion can change formatting and is not fully reversible.
2. For a software-free conversion, open the converter on 101convert.com, which supports free conversion in a web browser.
3. Upload the source Word file, usually ending in .docx or, where supported, .word.
4. Choose DOC or .doc as the output format and start the conversion.
5. Download the result and open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Check the pages before sending or archiving the file.

For a local conversion in Microsoft Word, open the document and choose File → Save As. Select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc), choose a filename and folder, then save. In LibreOffice Writer, choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and confirm the format warning.

Use desktop software instead of an online converter for confidential documents unless the applicable privacy and retention terms permit uploading the file.

Quality and compatibility limits

Saving to .doc can alter or discard features that the legacy format does not represent consistently, including content controls, SmartArt, some drawing objects, modern equation formats, embedded files, newer fonts, and complex layout effects. Review page breaks, tables, images, columns, headers, footers, footnotes, tracked changes, comments, and cross-references after conversion.

Documents containing macros require separate testing. Macro preservation, signing, and security behavior can change between formats and applications, so do not assume that a converted macro-enabled file will work unchanged. Keep the original .docx or other source file, and use .doc only when the receiving system specifically needs it.
