Convert WORD to INPAGE

Publishers convert Word files when a printer, newspaper desk, or Urdu layout team requires an editable .inp file for InPage. The text can be transferred, but Word page layout does not automatically become an InPage layout.

Word document formats

“Word” usually refers to Microsoft Word documents saved as .docx or the older .doc. .docx is an Office Open XML document package that can contain Unicode text, styles, tables, images, comments, headers, and other document settings; Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and WPS Office can open it to varying degrees.

Word is used for office documents, reports, letters, forms, and general editing. Modern Urdu text in Word is normally stored as Unicode, which can be displayed with Unicode fonts such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq, Noto Nastaliq Urdu, and Mehr Nastaliq.

InPage and the .inp format

.inp is InPage’s native, proprietary document format. InPage is a desktop publishing application used especially for Urdu publications and for Arabic-script languages including Persian and Pashto; it provides text frames, columns, page composition, image placement, and Nastaliq-oriented typesetting.

An .inp file is useful when the recipient must edit the publication in InPage or submit an InPage-based layout to a print workflow. It is not a general exchange format, and standard word processors do not normally open or edit it.

Transfer Word content into InPage

1. Open the source file in Microsoft Word and save an unchanged backup copy. Accept or reject tracked changes before transfer, and check that Urdu text displays correctly.
2. In InPage, create a new document with the required page size, margins, columns, and right-to-left layout settings. Create text frames for the text areas.
3. Copy a short sample of Urdu and Latin text from Word and paste it into an InPage text frame. If the characters remain readable and join correctly, transfer the remaining text in manageable sections.
4. Use plain-text paste when Word styling produces unsuitable formatting. For a large text-only document, save a copy from Word as Unicode plain text, such as document.txt encoded as UTF-8, then use InPage’s text-import command if that installed version provides one.
5. Apply fonts, paragraph direction, alignment, line spacing, justification, and Nastaliq settings in InPage. Rebuild headings and paragraph styles rather than relying on Word formatting.
6. Recreate tables, headers, footers, floating text boxes, images, captions, and multi-column arrangements with InPage frames and tools.
7. Save the editable layout as document.inp. Keep the original .docx and any plain-text working copy.

Do not assume that RTF or .docx import is available in every InPage release. If the installed version lists a Word, RTF, or text import option, test it on a copy and compare the result against clipboard transfer. Import support and retained formatting vary by InPage version.

Encoding and font checks

The main failure point is Unicode text versus older font-specific Urdu encodings. A Unicode Word document can contain correct Urdu characters even when its original font is unavailable; install a suitable Unicode Urdu font in InPage and check line endings after replacement.

Older documents may store Urdu letters as Latin-code characters mapped by a legacy font. Copying such text into InPage can produce Latin characters, broken letters, or gibberish. Open the file with its original legacy font and convert the text to Unicode with a verified font-specific conversion method before laying it out; changing fonts alone does not convert the encoding.

Layout and compatibility limits

Word margins, page breaks, tables, comments, revision marks, SmartArt, equations, floating objects, and image anchors do not map reliably to InPage objects. Complex certificates, forms, newspapers, and illustrated pages require manual reconstruction and proofreading.

Font substitution can substantially change Nastaliq line width, line breaks, overflow, and page count. Check every text frame for overset text, inspect ligatures and punctuation, and compare the final output against the source.

No reputable online converter is known to produce a reliably editable InPage .inp file from Word. Services such as Adobe Acrobat online or CloudConvert can create a PDF for review, but PDF output is not an editable InPage conversion. Export or print the completed InPage document to PDF for proofing before delivery.

.inp compatibility can also vary between InPage versions. Confirm the recipient’s InPage version and test the saved file on that system when the file must be edited elsewhere.
