How to convert pwi to doc file

An older Windows Mobile device may leave documents as .pwi files that current office software cannot open. Converting them to .doc makes them editable in older Word-compatible systems and easier to share or archive.

What the PWI format is

PWI is the document format used by Microsoft Pocket Word on Windows CE, Pocket PC, and Windows Mobile devices. It stores text with limited word-processing formatting and commonly appears in PDA backups, recovered device storage, and old synchronization folders.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word's binary document format, used extensively through Word 2003 and still supported by many desktop word processors and document-management systems. It can preserve formatted text, tables, images, headers, footers, and page layout. DOC is a legacy format; use DOCX instead when the receiving system does not specifically require DOC.

How to convert PWI to DOC

Microsoft ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center is the most authentic conversion route because its synchronization rules were designed to translate Pocket Word files for desktop Word.

  1. Use a Windows XP computer with Microsoft ActiveSync, or a compatible Windows Vista/7 system with Windows Mobile Device Center. Both products are obsolete, unavailable on many current systems, and may need to run in an older Windows installation or virtual machine.
  2. Connect the Windows Mobile device, or restore the relevant device backup so the .pwi file is accessible to the synchronization program.
  3. In the synchronization software, enable the Pocket Word/Word document conversion rule. In ActiveSync, this is generally under Tools → Options → Rules → Conversion Settings; labels vary by version.
  4. Copy or synchronize the .pwi file to the computer. ActiveSync may create a desktop Word-compatible file during transfer rather than simply copying the original.
  5. Open the output in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. If it is not already a .doc file, choose File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc).

If no device or legacy synchronization environment is available, ABC Amber Text Converter is a desktop alternative that has support for Pocket Word .pwi files and can export to Word .doc. Confirm that the specific version supports PWI before purchase or installation, because this is legacy software and current operating-system compatibility can vary.

Mainstream online converters do not consistently support .pwi, so a service that accepts only renamed files or does not explicitly list Pocket Word is not a reliable option. Do not rename .pwi to .doc: changing the extension does not change the internal format. If an online service explicitly supports PWI, test it with a copy and avoid uploading confidential records.

Compatibility and quality limits

Pocket Word has fewer features than desktop Word. Text and simple character formatting usually survive, but fonts, pagination, tables, images, embedded objects, headers, footers, and device-specific content may be altered or omitted. Handwritten annotations or data created by another Windows Mobile application may not be recoverable through a word-processor conversion.

Inspect the converted document in its entirety, then save a preservation copy of the original .pwi. For long-term access, keep the requested .doc plus a modern .docx or .pdf copy when the conversion preserves the content correctly.
