Convert TST to DOC

A DOC copy is needed when the program that created a .tst file is unavailable, or when the contents must be edited, printed, or shared in Microsoft Word. The correct method depends on the TST variant because the extension does not identify one standardized format.

What the TST format is

.tst is used by unrelated applications for plain-text files, test data, examination files, scripts, and proprietary device or software data. The extension alone does not reveal the file structure, and renaming .tst to .doc does not perform a conversion.

Check the program that created the file, its file properties, or a file-identification utility before selecting a converter. Open a copy in a plain-text editor such as Notepad or a code editor. Readable text indicates that manual import may work; binary data or structured records normally require the original application’s export function.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format. It can contain formatted paragraphs, tables, images, page settings, and styles, but it has older feature and compatibility limits than .docx.

Use DOC when a recipient or older system specifically requires it. For modern Word installations and general sharing, .docx is usually the better output, with PDF useful when the layout must remain fixed.

How to convert a text-based TST file

1. Make a backup of the original .tst file.
2. Open Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. LibreOffice is the main free desktop option.
3. Select File → Open, choose All files if necessary, and select the TST file. If it is recognized as plain text, use the text-import dialog.
4. Select the correct character encoding, commonly UTF-8 or Windows-1252. Check the preview for accented characters, line breaks, tabs, and delimiters.
5. Fix headings, tables, spacing, and page settings. Plain text contains no recoverable Word styles, images, or layout unless those elements are represented in the source data.
6. Select File → Save As and choose Word 97–2003 (*.doc). In Word, use the equivalent legacy DOC format option.

If Word or Writer does not import the file correctly, open it in a plain-text editor, copy the required text, paste it into Writer or Word, and save it as DOC. For tab- or comma-delimited data, use the application’s table or text-import options instead of relying on automatic paragraph detection.

How to convert a proprietary TST file

1. Identify and open the file with the application or device software that created it.
2. Use File → Export, File → Publish, or File → Save As.
3. Select DOC, DOCX, or RTF if offered. RTF is a useful intermediate format when the program does not export DOC.
4. Open the exported file in Word or LibreOffice, correct the layout, and save it as DOC only if the destination requires the legacy format.

If the source software exports only PDF, open that PDF in Word and inspect the reconstructed text, tables, diagrams, and page breaks before saving as DOC. This is OCR or layout reconstruction, not a lossless conversion.

Using an online converter

Services such as Zamzar and CloudConvert can be considered only when their upload page explicitly lists the specific TST variant and the file contains non-sensitive content. Generic online converters cannot interpret an unknown proprietary TST schema; a failed conversion may produce an empty or incomplete DOC.

Do not upload examination questions, credentials, regulated records, confidential device data, or other private files. Use the source application, Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or an offline text editor instead. Check the service’s retention and deletion policy before uploading any file.

Quality and compatibility limits

A conversion may preserve visible text while losing answer keys, scoring rules, metadata, embedded media, database structure, or fields used by the original program. DOC can also change complex tables, fonts, diagrams, modern Word features, and page breaks during export.

After saving, compare the DOC with the source or an export preview. Verify character encoding, headings, tables, images, page breaks, and every required answer or field. Keep the untouched TST file and, when accepted by the recipient, retain a DOCX or PDF copy alongside the DOC file.
