Convert dat to doc

Convert DAT to DOC

Convert readable DAT data to DOC while identifying files that need their source application.

Convert DAT files online

We don’t have a dedicated online converter for DAT to DOC yet, but you can convert DAT files online to these formats:

How to convert dat to doc file

A legacy Word installation, document-management system, or recipient may require a .doc file instead of the source .dat. Conversion is possible only when the DAT contains text or document data; renaming the extension never changes the file format.

What the DAT format is

.dat means generic data file, not one standardized format. Email clients, accounting software, games, installers, databases, media tools, and other applications use the extension for proprietary or supporting data.

Examples include winmail.dat Outlook TNEF attachments, VCD MPEG-1 video streams, delimiter-separated exports, plain-text files, and application-specific binary data. A DAT file is meaningful only to software that understands the format created by its source application.

Identify the source before converting. Check where the file came from and inspect its signature with a utility such as file filename.dat on Unix-like systems. Work on a copy and scan an unknown file before opening it.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, associated mainly with Word 97 through Word 2003 and still readable by current Word versions and many office suites. It can contain formatted text, tables, images, styles, headers, footers, and page layout.

DOC is suitable when an older Word-compatible file is explicitly required. For new documents, .docx is normally preferable because it is Word's modern XML-based format and generally handles newer features and recovery better.

How to convert text-based DAT files

  1. Copy the DAT file so the original remains unchanged.
  2. Open the copy in LibreOffice Writer through File → Open. If it is detected as text, select the correct character encoding, commonly UTF-8, and verify the imported text.
  3. For comma-, tab-, or semicolon-separated data, open the file in LibreOffice Calc first. Choose the correct separator and encoding in the import dialog, then copy the cleaned table into Writer if the result must be a word-processing document.
  4. Correct damaged characters, line breaks, tables, page breaks, margins, and images. Plain text does not contain the original fonts or layout.
  5. Use File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and confirm the compatibility warning. Open the saved file in Word or LibreOffice to check the result.

Microsoft Word can import a text DAT copy through File → Open → Browse; set the file filter to All Files, respond to the text-encoding prompt if shown, and save through File → Save As → Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc). If Word interprets the file as binary data, use the source application instead of forcing the import.

How to handle winmail.dat

winmail.dat is usually a Microsoft Outlook TNEF container, not a Word document. It may contain the original message formatting and one or more attachments.

Extract it with a dedicated TNEF utility such as Winmail Opener or Winmail.dat Reader, then open the extracted document in Word or LibreOffice and save it as DOC. A web decoder such as Winmaildat.com can be used for a non-confidential attachment, but private email, legal records, credentials, and business files should not be uploaded to an online service.

How to handle video and proprietary DAT files

A VCD DAT file is an MPEG-1 video stream and cannot be converted meaningfully into an editable DOC. Play or process it with media software, create a transcript or export captions, and then place that text in Word before saving as DOC.

Database and application-specific DAT files must be exported by the program that created them. Choose an export format such as TXT, CSV, RTF, DOCX, or HTML, then open the export in Word or LibreOffice and save a DOC copy. Randomly opening proprietary binary data in Word can produce unreadable characters or an empty document.

Online conversion options

CloudConvert and Zamzar may process a DAT file only when their service recognizes the contents as a supported text or document type; generic DAT acceptance does not prove that the file is convertible. Check the detected input type before submitting, upload only a non-sensitive copy, and inspect the downloaded DOC for missing text or layout.

For confidential or proprietary files, use the source application or desktop software instead of an online converter. No converter can recover fonts, images, structure, or metadata that the DAT does not contain or that its import filter cannot interpret.

Quality and compatibility limits

Saving as DOC can change modern Word features, fonts, floating objects, fields, tracked changes, equation objects, and complex tables. If DOC is not mandatory, retain the original and save an additional copy as .docx or PDF.

The database currently does not contain any direct dat file converter links.

Frequently asked questions

Can any DAT file be converted to DOC?

No. DAT is a generic extension, so only DAT files containing readable text or document-like data can be converted reliably; application-specific or binary DAT files need the program that created them.

Will the formatting in a DAT file stay the same in DOC?

Not necessarily. Plain-text DAT files do not contain word-processing layout, fonts, styles, or page structure, so the resulting DOC may need formatting to be added or corrected.

Why does my DAT file open as garbled text after conversion to DOC?

This usually means the DAT file is binary, encoded differently, or belongs to a specific application rather than being a text document. Converting it without interpreting its original format can produce unreadable characters instead of meaningful content.

Can I edit the converted DAT file in DOC?

You can edit the parts that were successfully interpreted as document text, but conversion cannot restore information that was not readable or supported. Structured data, embedded content, and application-specific features may be missing or flattened.
