Convert TMP to DOC

A temporary file may need to be saved as .doc when it contains a recoverable Word document and an older Word installation, business system, or recipient requires the legacy format. This is a recovery task, not a normal file conversion, because most .tmp files are not documents.

What a TMP file is

TMP is a generic temporary-file extension, not a defined file format. Windows, Microsoft Word, browsers, installers, email clients, and other applications use it for incomplete output, caches, working copies, and recovery data.

A file created near a missing Word document, with a similar timestamp and a substantial size, may contain usable document data. Files whose names begin with ~$, such as ~$report.docx, are normally Word owner/lock files; they do not contain the document.

Check the file's original folder, size, creation time, and nearby files before attempting recovery. On Windows, Word recovery files may also exist as .asd files, backup copies as .wbk, or as the original .doc/.docx file.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, associated with Word 97–2003. Current Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and Apache OpenOffice Writer can generally open and save it; it can preserve formatted text, tables, images, headers, and some embedded objects.

Use DOC only when a legacy application or recipient specifically requires it. For new documents, .docx is usually the better choice because it is the current Word format and commonly produces smaller files; saving to DOC can reduce compatibility with newer Word features.

Recovering a document from a TMP file

1. Make a copy of the TMP file. Keep the original unchanged. Do not work from a zero-byte file or a very small ~$ lock file.
2. Try Word before changing the extension. In Microsoft Word, select File → Open → Browse, choose All Files (*.*), select the copied TMP file, and open it. If normal opening fails, use the arrow beside Open and select Open and Repair.
3. If Word offers an encoding or conversion choice, try Recover Text from Any File (*.*). This can retrieve text from damaged data but usually loses layout, tables, images, headers, and revision history.
4. If the file opens correctly, select File → Save As and choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc). Check the saved file before deleting or replacing anything.
5. If Word cannot open it, try LibreOffice Writer: select File → Open, choose All Files, open the copy, then select File → Save As and choose Word 97–2003 (.doc). Review tables, fonts, page breaks, and images after export.
6. For an unsaved Word document, use Word's recovery feature instead: File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents. This is more reliable than treating every TMP file as a Word document.

Renaming file.tmp to file.doc does not convert its contents. It can be worth trying on a copy when the file is known to have come from Word, but it only helps software that relies on the filename extension when choosing how to open the file.

Online services and compatibility limits

Do not upload an unknown TMP file to an online converter. Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert supported, identified document formats, but neither can reliably determine the contents of an arbitrary temporary file. Use them only after establishing that the file is actually a supported source format and after considering confidentiality requirements.

A Word-generated temporary file may be incomplete, so recovered content can be missing recent edits or formatting. A TMP file containing browser cache data, installer data, encrypted content, or application-specific binary data cannot be converted meaningfully to DOC.

If the TMP extension appeared after a ransomware incident, changing the extension or using a document converter will not decrypt the file. Preserve the encrypted files and ransom note, identify the ransomware strain, and check a reputable decryptor source such as No More Ransom before attempting restoration from backups.
