We can't read CWK files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into DOC:

How to convert cwk to doc file

Older AppleWorks files may be unreadable in current Microsoft Word, while a recipient, records system, or older office application may require the legacy .doc format. Converting the word-processing document through RTF preserves more editable content than copying and pasting.

What the CWK format is

.cwk identifies documents created by ClarisWorks or AppleWorks, productivity suites used mainly on classic Mac systems and early versions of Mac OS X. The extension does not identify the document type: a CWK file can contain a word-processing document, spreadsheet, database, drawing, or presentation.

Most surviving files were created by AppleWorks 5 or 6, although ClarisWorks 4 and earlier versions used other internal structures. A current application may therefore open one CWK file and reject another. The procedures below apply primarily to word-processing CWK files; spreadsheets, databases, drawings, and presentations cannot be represented faithfully as one Word document.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's binary Word 97–2003 format. It supports editable text, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, and page layout, and remains useful when a legacy application or submission system rejects .docx.

DOC is an older format with less consistent support for modern features and greater security risk from untrusted files than DOCX. If no legacy requirement exists, save the finished document as .docx instead.

How to convert a word-processing CWK file

  1. Make a backup of the original file and perform the conversion on a copy.
  2. Open the copy in AppleWorks 6 or in the ClarisWorks version that created it. Current macOS releases do not run AppleWorks directly; use a compatible older Mac or a legally configured classic-Mac environment if necessary.
  3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, then select Rich Text Format (RTF). RTF normally retains editable text, basic formatting, and some tables better than clipboard transfer.
  4. Open the resulting .rtf file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.
  5. Check fonts, page breaks, margins, headers, footers, tables, images, footnotes, text boxes, and special characters. Correct the layout before creating the final file.
  6. In Word, choose File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc). In LibreOffice Writer, choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and accept the legacy-format warning.

Try opening the CWK directly in LibreOffice Writer before installing older software. Its import support varies by AppleWorks version and document type; if the file opens correctly, use File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 (.doc). This direct route may avoid an RTF conversion, but it still requires a visual check.

Online conversion options

Services such as Zamzar and Convertio may accept some ClarisWorks or AppleWorks files and return DOC or RTF. Support for this uncommon format changes, so confirm that the service identifies the upload as a CWK document rather than merely accepting the filename extension. Download the result, open it in Word or LibreOffice, and inspect every page.

Do not upload confidential or regulated material to an online converter: the file leaves your computer and conversion may involve third-party storage. Desktop conversion with AppleWorks, LibreOffice, or Word is preferable for private records.

Conversion limitations

AppleWorks-specific layouts may not survive conversion. Custom fonts, drawings, database layouts, spreadsheet formulas, embedded objects, text boxes, page numbering, footnotes, and Asian or symbol characters can be changed, omitted, or substituted. A PDF export may preserve the appearance better, but PDF is not an editable replacement for DOC.

For archival purposes, retain the original .cwk file and, when practical, an exported PDF or RTF alongside the converted .doc. The original is the only reliable source for recovering content lost during conversion.
