A recipient, submission system, or older office application may require an editable Microsoft Word file instead of an XMind map. Converting the map to DOC usually produces a linear outline, so it is intended for reports, editing, or archiving rather than preserving the original canvas exactly.

What the XMind format is

.xmind is XMind’s native mind-map format, used for brainstorming, project planning, meeting notes, study outlines, and hierarchical information. An XMind file can contain topics, notes, relationships, labels, boundaries, markers, themes, attachments, and multiple sheets. Different XMind releases can use different internal package structures, so the file should be opened and exported in XMind rather than edited by changing files inside the package.

Renaming map.xmind to map.doc does not convert it; it changes only the filename extension and leaves the file unreadable as a Word document.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, associated mainly with Word 97–2003. It supports editable paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, images, headers, footers, and basic page layout, which makes it suitable for older applications and systems that reject .docx.

.docx is the newer Word format and normally provides better compatibility with current Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and document-processing software. Use DOC only when the receiving system specifically requires it; save the final DOC conversion for the end of the workflow.

How to convert an XMind file to DOC

1. Open the .xmind file in XMind Desktop or another XMind release that can read it. Keep an unchanged backup of the original map.
2. Prepare the map before exporting. Check topic text, notes, labels, branch order, non-Latin characters, and the sheets that need to be included. Expand or collapse branches according to the required document structure.
3. In XMind, open File → Export. If the installed edition provides a Word export, select Word or Microsoft Word, choose the relevant sheets and layout options, and save the result, usually as map.docx. Menu names and export formats vary between XMind editions.
4. Open the exported DOCX in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. In Word, select File → Save As and choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc). In LibreOffice, select File → Save As and choose Word 97–2003 (.doc), then accept the format warning.
5. Reopen the saved map.doc file. Check headings, indentation, branch order, tables, images, hyperlinks, page breaks, and special characters before sending or archiving it.

If the XMind edition has no Word export, switch to its outline view, copy the outline into Word or Writer, apply heading and list styles, and save as DOC. This preserves editable text better than importing a rendered map, but it requires manual formatting. A PDF or image export can preserve the map’s appearance when inserted into a DOC file, but the result is generally not an editable outline and may be imported as positioned objects or images.

Quality and compatibility limits

XMind maps are spatial, while Word documents are page-oriented. Conversion normally turns branches into headings or indented list items; canvas positions, connecting lines, floating topics, boundaries, themes, markers, task metadata, and some relationships may be simplified or omitted. Notes and attachments may become text, links, separate objects, or may not transfer.

Deep hierarchies can create long documents, while wide maps may need landscape orientation, smaller margins, or manual page breaks. DOC also has weaker support for modern layout and embedded-content features than DOCX. Preserve the original .xmind file as the editable master and use DOCX instead of DOC whenever the recipient accepts it.
