Free online ENW to DOC converter

An ENW export is converted when references must be delivered as an editable Word document, submitted to an older system, or preserved in a DOC-based archive. The useful result is usually a formatted bibliography; simply changing the filename extension does not interpret the reference data.

What the ENW format is

In the Documents category, .enw is EndNote's tagged-text reference format. It stores one or more bibliographic records as plain text, using tags such as %A for author and %T for title, along with fields for year, journal, volume, pages, DOI, keywords, and other citation data.

EndNote Desktop and some academic databases create ENW files for transferring references into EndNote or compatible reference-management software. ENW does not normally contain page layout, fonts, images, reference PDFs, live citations, or the appearance of a finished manuscript. Opening it in a text editor therefore shows tags and field values rather than a formatted bibliography.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft's legacy binary Word document format, associated primarily with Word 97–2003. It can contain formatted paragraphs, tables, images, headers, footers, page settings, and bibliography text, and it remains supported by current Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer.

DOC is appropriate when an older application, submission system, or archive specifically requires it. If the recipient accepts modern Word files, .docx is generally preferable because it provides better compatibility with newer Word features and is the current Office document format.

How to convert ENW to DOC

Use EndNote Desktop when the output must be a readable, styled bibliography.

1. Open EndNote Desktop and open an existing library or create a new one.
2. Choose File → Import → File, select the .enw file, and set the import option to EndNote Import or the equivalent EndNote tagged-text filter.
3. Check the imported records for missing fields, incorrect author names, damaged accented characters, duplicate entries, and incorrect publication data.
4. Select the required references and choose an output style in EndNote. The style determines field order, punctuation, journal abbreviations, italics, DOI presentation, and hanging indents.
5. Use EndNote's formatted-copy or export function. References → Copy Formatted lets you paste the bibliography directly into Word; File → Export can create a formatted .rtf file when that option is available.
6. Open the pasted bibliography or .rtf file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer and inspect its formatting.
7. In Word, choose File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc). In LibreOffice Writer, select Word 97–2003 (*.doc) as the output format.

For a manuscript containing citations, import the ENW records into EndNote, connect EndNote to Word with its word-processor add-in, and insert or match the citations there. Generate the bibliography before saving the final manuscript as DOC. An ENW file alone cannot recreate citation fields or formatting that were not included in the export.

To preserve the raw ENW text instead of creating a bibliography: open the file in a plain-text editor or Writer, copy it into a new document, and save that document as Word 97–2003 (*.doc). The tags remain visible, so this produces a DOC container for the original export rather than a formatted reference list.

Quality and compatibility limits

ENW and DOC describe different things: ENW contains structured bibliographic data, while DOC contains a paginated document. There is no universal one-to-one conversion from one format to the other; the result depends on the completeness of the records, the selected bibliography style, and the software performing the conversion.

If names or diacritics are corrupted, re-import the file using the encoding used by the source export. Do not assume that changing the extension or saving through Word will correct encoding errors. Check corporate authors, name order, non-Latin text, dates, journal titles, page ranges, quotation marks, italics, DOI values, duplicate records, hanging indents, and page breaks.

Saving as DOC can change spacing, fields, line wrapping, and newer Word features. Keep the original ENW file and EndNote library, and retain a DOCX master when the recipient permits it. A conversion cannot recover reference PDFs, figures, footnotes, live citation links, or layout information that was never stored in the ENW export.
