Convert ENW to PDF

A program or submission system may require a fixed, printable reference list instead of an EndNote data file. Converting an ENW file to PDF creates a shareable bibliography, but it does not add article PDFs or attachments that the ENW file does not contain.

What the ENW format is

An ENW file is usually an EndNote tagged export file: plain text containing bibliographic records rather than page layout. Tags identify fields, including %A for author, %T for title, %D for year or date, and other tags for publication details. EndNote, library databases, and other reference managers can create ENW files for transferring citations.

Because ENW contains citation metadata, not a finished document, changing .enw to .txt only exposes the tagged text. It does not produce a correctly formatted bibliography. The records must first be imported into a reference manager and rendered with a style such as APA, MLA, Chicago, or Vancouver.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page size, fonts, spacing, pagination, and print appearance across operating systems. It is useful for submitting, printing, sharing, or archiving a formatted reference list without requiring the recipient to install EndNote.

PDF is a presentation format, so it does not preserve the editable author, title, journal, and date fields in the ENW source. Keep the original .enw file or the EndNote library if you may need to correct references or generate another citation style.

Convert ENW with EndNote Desktop

1. Open EndNote Desktop and create or open a library.
2. Choose File → Import → File, select the .enw file, and set Import Option to EndNote Import. Set Duplicates to Import All or Discard Duplicates, as appropriate, then import the file.
3. Inspect several imported records. Correct missing authors, titles, dates, journal names, page ranges, identifiers, and reference types before formatting.
4. Select the references to include and choose the required output style from EndNote's style selector. Use References → Print Preview to check the formatted bibliography.
5. Choose File → Print. On Windows, select Microsoft Print to PDF; on macOS, open the PDF menu in the system print dialog and choose Save as PDF. Save the output, for example as references.pdf.

For an ENW file containing one citation, the same import-and-print process is preferable to opening the file in a word processor, which normally displays EndNote tags instead of a styled reference.

Use Zotero or another local reference manager

If EndNote Desktop is unavailable, try importing the file into a current version of Zotero with File → Import. Import support can vary by version and by the exact ENW variant. After importing, select the references, choose Create Bibliography from Items, select a citation style, copy the result into LibreOffice Writer or another word processor, and export it with File → Export as PDF or the application's print-to-PDF command.

If Zotero cannot identify the file, obtain RIS, BibTeX, or another supported export from the original database or reference manager. Manually replacing tags is more likely to corrupt authors, corporate names, dates, and publication fields.

Online converters and raw-text output

General services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may convert a plain-text file to a PDF, but they normally preserve the ENW tags as text and do not apply EndNote citation styles. Use them only when a visual copy of the raw file is required, not when a correctly formatted bibliography is needed.

There is no broadly reliable online ENW-to-PDF service that can replace local bibliographic import and style rendering. Avoid uploading unpublished references, private research data, or sensitive metadata to an online converter; EndNote Desktop or Zotero keeps processing local.

Quality and compatibility limits

• ENW generally contains citation metadata only. Linked full-text PDFs, notes, custom fields, groups, and other library data are not necessarily included.
• Import filters can misread corporate authors, accented characters, capitalization, page ranges, unusual reference types, and nonstandard tags. Compare sample records with the original database before producing the PDF.
• The selected style controls field order, punctuation, abbreviations, and which fields appear. To change those details later, return to the imported data and create a new PDF.
• For a bibliography extracted from a Word document, print the complete document to PDF through File → Print so that in-text citations and the bibliography remain together. An ENW export alone contains references, not the surrounding document.
