A submission portal, printer, or recipient may require a fixed reference list instead of an EndNote exchange file. Converting the records to PDF creates a shareable, printable copy, but it does not add full-text attachments or preserve the editable EndNote library.

What the ENW format is

In the Documents context, .enw usually identifies an EndNote tagged export file. EndNote, scholarly databases, and reference managers use it to exchange bibliographic records containing authors, titles, journal or book details, dates, volume and page information, identifiers, and sometimes abstracts.

An ENW file is normally plain text with field tags such as %A for author, %T for title, and %D for date. It stores citation data rather than the page layout of a finished bibliography. Renaming .enw to .txt only exposes the tagged text; it does not apply APA, MLA, Chicago, Vancouver, or another citation style.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page size, fonts, positioning, line breaks, and pagination across compatible operating systems and printers. It is suitable for submission, printing, sharing, and archiving a formatted reference list without requiring the recipient to install EndNote.

PDF is presentation-oriented rather than a convenient structured reference format. Keep the original .enw file or EndNote library if you may need to correct fields, change citation styles, or regenerate the bibliography.

Convert ENW with EndNote Desktop

1. Open EndNote Desktop and create or open a library.
2. Choose File → Import → File, select the .enw file, and set Import Option to EndNote Import. If the file contains accented or non-Latin characters, select the appropriate text translation, commonly Unicode (UTF-8). Choose how duplicates should be handled, then import the records.
3. Inspect several records and correct missing or misread authors, titles, dates, journal names, page ranges, identifiers, and reference types. Corporate authors and unusual publication types need particular checking.
4. Select the references to include and choose the required output style from EndNote’s style selector. Use References → Print Preview to check ordering, punctuation, abbreviations, page breaks, and displayed fields.
5. Choose File → Print. On Windows, select Microsoft Print to PDF; on macOS, choose Save as PDF in the system print dialog. Set the paper size and destination, then save the result as a file such as references.pdf.

For references that belong inside a paper, insert or format the bibliography through EndNote’s Microsoft Word integration and export the complete document with File → Save As → PDF or the print-to-PDF command. A standalone ENW export contains references, not the surrounding text or in-text citations.

Convert the file as raw tagged text

If a visual copy of the original ENW contents is all that is required, open the file in a text editor or office application, verify the character encoding, and use File → Export as PDF or print to PDF. The resulting document will show tags such as %A and %T; it is not a publication-ready bibliography.

This is appropriate for a PDF copy of the file’s text, but a generic conversion does not necessarily import records or apply an EndNote citation style. Quality and compatibility limits

• ENW generally transfers citation fields only. Linked full-text PDFs, notes, custom fields, groups, attachments, and other library structures are not necessarily included.
• An incorrect import filter can leave the tags visible or misplace fields. If the output begins with raw tags, re-import the file with EndNote Import rather than opening it directly in a word processor.
• Import filters and incomplete source records can affect corporate names, accented characters, capitalization, symbols, page ranges, dates, identifiers, and reference types. Compare sample records with the original database before creating the final PDF.
• The selected output style determines field order, punctuation, abbreviations, capitalization, and DOI presentation. To produce another style, return to the imported records and generate a new PDF.
• A PDF can contain selectable text, but converting it back to reliable EndNote fields is not guaranteed. Retain the ENW source or EndNote library for future edits.
