Convert AWW to PDF

A document received from Ability Write may be unreadable on systems without Ability Office, while PDF can be viewed, printed, and archived with standard software. Exporting it is also useful when the recipient needs a fixed-layout copy rather than an editable source file.

What the AWW format is

AWW is the native document format of Ability Write, the word processor included with Ability Office from Ability Software International. An AWW file can contain formatted text, tables, images, page settings, headers, footers, columns, and other word-processing content.

AWW files are mainly encountered in documents created with Ability Office, including files recovered from older Windows installations or supplied by organizations using Ability Write instead of Microsoft Word or LibreOffice. AWW is a proprietary format and is not a reliable interchange format for general-purpose word processors. Renaming .aww to .pdf changes only the filename extension; it does not convert the document.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed to preserve text placement, graphics, fonts, and pagination across operating systems and printers. It is suitable for sharing, printing, email attachments, records, and viewing without Ability Office.

PDF is a distribution format, not a direct replacement for the editable AWW source. Basic text may remain searchable and selectable, but word-processing styles, reflow, tracked changes, and other editing features may not survive export. Use PDF/A when a separate archival standard is required and the conversion software provides that option.

How to convert AWW to PDF

With Ability Write

1. Install a compatible version of Ability Office and open Ability Write.
2. Choose File → Open and select the .aww file.
3. Check the document in print preview, including page breaks, fonts, tables, images, columns, headers, footers, and text boxes.
4. Use the version's PDF export or PDF save command, commonly found under File → Export or File → Save As. Select PDF, choose a filename and destination, and confirm the export.
5. Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and inspect every page before distributing it. Keep the original AWW file if later editing may be needed.

Menu names vary between Ability Office releases. If the installation has no PDF export command, choose File → Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or another installed PDF printer. Set the required page range and output filename, then print to create the PDF.

With an online converter

Online conversion is practical only for non-confidential files and only when the service explicitly accepts Ability Write AWW files. Zamzar has offered AWW-to-PDF conversion, but supported formats and upload limits can change; verify that its current input list identifies AWW as an Ability Write document before uploading. Upload the original file, choose PDF as the output, download the result, and delete the uploaded file from the service if its controls permit.

Do not upload contracts, personal records, unpublished work, or proprietary documents to an unverified converter. General converters that accept DOC or DOCX do not necessarily accept AWW, and selecting DOC as a substitute will not make an AWW file readable.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Install the fonts used by the source document when possible. Substituted fonts can change line wrapping, pagination, table positions, and page count.
• Inspect complex layouts after export, especially floating images, text boxes, footnotes, columns, tables, and manual page breaks.
• PDF export can discard editable word-processing features, tracked changes, comments, some metadata, and unsupported embedded objects.
• A PDF printer generally captures the rendered page but may omit document structure, hyperlinks, bookmarks, tags, or selectable text if the source renders those elements incorrectly.
• If Ability Write cannot open the file, confirm that it is an Ability Write document, try a compatible Ability Office release, and obtain a fresh copy if the file may be damaged.
