How to convert tmd to pdf file

TextMaker documents are often converted when a recipient, document portal, or archive accepts PDF but cannot open .tmd. PDF preserves the visible page layout for viewing and printing without requiring TextMaker.

What a TMD file is

A .tmd file is commonly a legacy SoftMaker TextMaker word-processing document. TextMaker is included with SoftMaker Office and FreeOffice; current TextMaker releases generally use .tmdx for newly saved documents. TextMaker documents can contain formatted text, tables, images, headers, footnotes, page numbering, and page-layout settings.

The extension is ambiguous. Nintendo Wii and Wii U title-metadata files and Sony PlayStation TMD model files also use .tmd; these are binary game or system resources, not documents. A file obtained from a console dump, game archive, or development package cannot be directly converted into a useful PDF.

What PDF provides

PDF is a fixed-layout document format standardized as ISO 32000. It is widely supported by browsers, operating systems, mobile devices, document-management systems, and print services.

A PDF export normally preserves page size, page breaks, fonts, tables, and images more reliably than copying content into another editor. PDF is intended for distribution and retention; it does not retain the normal editable TextMaker document structure or features such as macros.

Convert a TextMaker document

Use TextMaker where possible. It is the most reliable option because it natively supports its own legacy document format.

  1. Open the source file in SoftMaker TextMaker using File → Open.
  2. Inspect page breaks, tables, images, and any text shown in a replacement font.
  3. Select File → Export as PDF.
  4. Choose the output folder and PDF options, then save the file as, for example, document.pdf.
  5. Open the exported PDF in a separate viewer and compare each page with the source before distributing it.

Use TextMaker's PDF export instead of a virtual PDF printer when available. Export can preserve document navigation and hyperlinks where supported, while print-to-PDF generally creates only the printed page appearance.

If TextMaker cannot be installed, LibreOffice Writer may open some older TextMaker files. Use File → Open, then File → Export As → Export as PDF. Its import support is not identical to TextMaker's, so verify every page, especially complex tables and documents using uncommon fonts.

For a non-confidential one-time conversion, CloudConvert and Zamzar offer browser conversion for files they identify as TextMaker documents. Upload only a copy of the file and do not use third-party services for contracts, personal data, regulated records, or other restricted material.

Quality and compatibility checks

Missing fonts can change line wrapping, page count, and table widths. Export on a computer with the source document's fonts installed; review the PDF before sending it. If font embedding is offered, enable it unless a recipient's workflow requires otherwise.

Choose higher image quality for printing, scans, diagrams, and photos. Image downsampling or strong JPEG compression reduces file size but can make text in screenshots and scanned pages unreadable.

Use PDF/A only when an archive specifically requires it. PDF/A conversion can restrict encryption and may substitute or reject non-embeddable fonts; validate the exported file against the archive's required PDF/A level.

If the .tmd file is console metadata or a game-model resource, use the relevant package-analysis or model-viewing tool instead. A PDF can only be created from a separate report, screenshot, or exported metadata listing; it is not a direct document conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Will my TMD document keep its formatting when converted to PDF?

Usually, the PDF preserves the TextMaker document's page layout, text, and images as they appear when opened. Missing or substituted fonts, unsupported objects, and legacy formatting can change line breaks or page layout.

Can I still edit my TMD file after converting it to PDF?

No, the PDF is a fixed-layout version and does not retain TextMaker's full editing structure. Text may remain selectable, but features such as styles, tables, and embedded objects are not preserved as editable document elements.

Why is my TMD file not recognized as a TextMaker document?

The .tmd extension is also used for some console and game data files, which are unrelated to TextMaker. A file that is not actually a legacy TextMaker document cannot be converted to a meaningful PDF this way.

Why does the converted PDF have different page breaks or missing characters?

This usually happens when the original TMD uses fonts or document features that are unavailable or unsupported during conversion. Font substitution and incomplete support for legacy TextMaker content can alter pagination or omit parts of the document.
