What the WKS format is

WKS is a legacy spreadsheet format used primarily by Microsoft Works Spreadsheet. Some files with this extension were also produced by older Lotus spreadsheet software, so the extension does not always identify the exact file variant. WKS files can contain cells, formulas, formatting, tables, and charts.

Microsoft Works is discontinued, and current Microsoft Excel versions generally do not open its WKS files. Keep an unchanged backup and identify the program that created the file when possible; a WKS file from one application may not import correctly into another.

What the PDF format is

How to convert a WKS file to PDF

Using the original spreadsheet software

1. Make a backup copy of the .wks file.
2. Open the copy in Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or the compatible Lotus application that created it.
3. Check formulas, dates, totals, charts, fonts, special characters, and worksheet tabs.
4. Set the paper size, orientation, margins, print area, and scaling in the application’s page or print settings.
5. Choose File → Print, select a PDF printer such as Microsoft Print to PDF, and save the result with a .pdf extension. If the program provides it, File → Export → PDF can be used instead.

Installing Microsoft Works on a current system may require an old compatible operating system and a legitimate installer. Do not overwrite the original file during conversion.

Using LibreOffice Calc

1. Install LibreOffice and open Calc.
2. Choose File → Open and select the WKS file.
3. Review the imported worksheet for changed formulas, charts, fonts, dates, merged cells, and formatting. WKS compatibility depends on the file’s originating application and version.
4. Set the print range, page size, orientation, margins, and scaling in the sheet’s page-style or print settings.
5. Choose File → Export as PDF, select the required page and image options, and save the PDF.

If Calc cannot open the file, use the original compatible program to save a copy in a format Calc supports, such as .xls, then export that copy. Saving as .csv retains cell values but removes formulas, formatting, charts, and multiple-sheet structure, so it is unsuitable when the PDF must reproduce the worksheet’s appearance.
