Convert PART to PDF

A .part file may appear to be a document that a browser or application cannot open after an interrupted download. The practical solution is to finish or recover the download, then export the completed file as PDF for sharing, printing, or archiving.

What the PART format is

.part is usually a temporary filename extension, not a standard document format. Firefox commonly uses it for downloads in progress; other browsers and download managers use extensions such as .crdownload or their own temporary naming schemes.

The partial data might represent a PDF, office document, archive, image, video, installer, or another file type. The extension does not identify the contents, and an interrupted file may lack data or metadata required to open it. Browsers and download managers can often resume the transfer only when the original temporary file and download information remain available.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores pages with their layout, text, images, and, when fonts are embedded, much of their visual appearance across operating systems. It is commonly required for submissions and document systems, and it supports consistent printing, sharing, and long-term storage.

PDF conversion applies to the completed source file, not to the temporary .part extension. A completed document, spreadsheet, presentation, or image can be exported or printed to PDF with suitable desktop software.

How to convert the completed download

1. Return to the browser or download manager that created the file and choose resume. If the original download page is available, start the download again and let it reach 100%.
2. Do not rename, move, or delete the temporary file while the transfer is active; the application may no longer be able to resume it.
3. After completion, check that the file has its expected extension, such as .pdf, .docx, .odt, .jpg, or .zip.
4. For .docx, .odt, spreadsheets, and presentations, open the completed file in LibreOffice and choose File → Export as PDF. Microsoft Office provides equivalent commands under File → Save As or File → Export.
5. For .jpg, .png, and other printable images, use Print → Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, Print → PDF → Save as PDF on macOS, or the PDF printer supplied by the Linux desktop.
6. For a completed archive such as .zip or .7z, extract it with 7-Zip or the operating system's archive utility, then convert the document inside it.

If the download manager no longer recognizes the temporary file, make a copy before testing it. On Linux or macOS, file filename.part can sometimes identify the data from its signature. On Windows, check the original download source or use a trusted file-identification utility. Identification does not repair or convert the file.

Online conversion options

Upload the file only after the download finishes, confirm that the service supports its actual format, and download the result. Do not upload confidential, personal, proprietary, or regulated files unless the service's security and retention terms are acceptable; LibreOffice, Microsoft Office, and system PDF printing keep processing on the local device.

Quality and compatibility limits

Renaming filename.part to filename.pdf works only when the data is already a complete PDF and the extension is wrong. Renaming does not convert a Word file, archive, image, or other format, and it cannot complete an interrupted transfer.

A truncated download may open with missing pages, broken images, invalid cross-reference data, or unreadable content. PDF software cannot recreate bytes that were never downloaded, so re-downloading the source is the dependable fix. Repair utilities may salvage intact portions of a damaged PDF but cannot guarantee a complete document.

If the completed file is encrypted, compressed in a proprietary format, or dependent on specialized software, open it with the original application and use that application's PDF export. If it is already a valid PDF, no conversion is needed; correct the filename only when its extension is genuinely incorrect.
