How to convert opx to pdf file

Recipients often need an organizational chart that can be viewed and printed without OrgPlus or Microsoft Organization Chart. Converting it to PDF also provides a fixed-layout copy for email, records, and document-management systems.

What the OPX format is

OPX is a proprietary organizational-chart format most commonly associated with HumanConcepts OrgPlus. It stores an editable chart structure, including reporting relationships, employee or position data, formatting, and sometimes images. Older Microsoft Organization Chart installations also used .opx; those files are not necessarily interchangeable with OrgPlus files, so identify the program that created the file before choosing a converter.

OPX files are used mainly by HR departments, business-planning teams, and organizations with archives created by OrgPlus or legacy Microsoft Office components. Renaming .opx to .pdf does not convert the file.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format intended to preserve page appearance across operating systems and printers. It is suitable for distributing a chart to people without the source application, attaching it to personnel or corporate records, and producing a read-only presentation.

PDF does not preserve the OPX editing model. OrgPlus chart objects, reporting data, and interactive features become page content; the result is normally not editable as an organizational chart.

How to convert an OrgPlus OPX file

  1. Install a compatible version of HumanConcepts OrgPlus and open the file through File → Open. If the file was created by a different OrgPlus release, use that release or a version documented as backward-compatible.
  2. Review the chart and configure its page or print setup. Choose paper size, portrait or landscape orientation, margins, scaling, and page breaks. Large charts usually require landscape orientation, a tiled multi-page layout, or a custom larger paper size.
  3. Use File → Export → PDF if the installed edition provides native PDF export. Select the required chart or pages, output quality or resolution where available, and the destination .pdf filename.
  4. Open the result in a PDF viewer. Check connector lines, text size, page order, images, margins, and clipped or missing chart areas before distributing it.

Use print-to-PDF when export is unavailable

If the OrgPlus edition has no PDF export command, choose File → Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows. On macOS, use the system print dialog’s Save as PDF option. Set the print range, paper size, orientation, and scaling before saving.

Print-to-PDF captures the rendered print output, not the source chart structure. It may use different pagination from native export and may omit features that exist only in the application interface.

Converting older Microsoft Organization Chart OPX files

Open these files in the Microsoft Organization Chart or Office installation that created them, then use its print command with a PDF printer. Office 2003-era software may require a separately installed PDF printer because it does not include the modern Windows PDF printer. If the file cannot be opened, ask the sender to open it in the original application and export or print it to PDF; an OrgPlus installation is not a guaranteed replacement for Microsoft Organization Chart.

Compatibility and quality limits

OPX is not a broadly supported interchange format, and general office software cannot reliably interpret it. Online services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should be considered only when their current format lists explicitly accept OPX and the file is non-confidential; many general converters do not support this format or may not distinguish OrgPlus files from Microsoft Organization Chart files. Local conversion with the originating application is safer for personnel data.

Missing fonts can change text wrapping, connector placement, and page breaks. Very large charts can produce unreadably small labels when forced onto one page, while multi-page output can separate connectors across page boundaries. Check the final PDF at its intended print size and reconfigure scaling or page breaks when necessary.
