Convert GML to PDF

A graph stored as GML may need to be sent to people who do not have a graph editor or included in a report that requires fixed pages. Exporting the rendered graph to PDF creates a printable, shareable view, but does not turn the graph data into an editable word-processing document.

What the GML format is

In the Documents category, GML means Graph Modeling Language, a text-based format for describing graphs. It stores nodes, edges, identifiers, labels, coordinates, visual attributes, and other graph properties rather than paragraphs and page layouts.

Graph editors and analysis applications use GML for network diagrams, relationship maps, flowcharts, and other node-and-edge data. yEd is a common desktop application for opening and arranging GML files; Gephi and applications built with graph libraries can also support GML, depending on the file's syntax and version.

GML is not a fixed-page format. A file can contain graph data without specifying a final paper size, page break, font substitution, or complete visual arrangement. The application that opens it must interpret the data and render the graph.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that preserves page dimensions, vector graphics, text placement, fonts, and pagination across operating systems. It is suitable for printing, emailing, publishing in reports, and archiving a visual copy of a graph without requiring the recipient to install a GML-compatible editor.

PDF is usually a presentation format rather than an editable graph source. Depending on the export settings, the resulting file may retain selectable text and vector lines, but it normally does not preserve nodes and edges as objects that can be rearranged in a graph editor. Keep the original .gml file for future editing.

How to convert GML to PDF

Using yEd

1. Make a backup of the original .gml file.
2. Open yEd Graph Editor and choose File → Open, then select the GML file. If yEd reports a syntax or version error, the file may use a nonstandard GML variant or contain unsupported attributes.
3. Arrange the graph and apply a layout if necessary. Check node labels, edge routing, page orientation, font sizes, and the graph's overall scale before exporting.
4. Choose yEd's PDF export command, normally under File → Export, select PDF, and configure the page size, orientation, margins, scaling, and page splitting if those options are available in the installed version.
5. Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and inspect every page for clipped labels, overlapping objects, missing symbols, unreadable text, and edges that cross page boundaries.

Use vector PDF export rather than a screenshot or raster image when available. Vector output keeps lines and text sharp when the graph is enlarged or printed. For a very large graph, a single scaled page can make labels unreadable; exporting across multiple pages or producing separate subgraphs may be more practical.

Using another graph application

If yEd cannot read the file, try a graph application that explicitly supports its GML dialect, such as Gephi. Import the file, verify the node and edge data, apply a layout, and use the application's PDF export or export to SVG followed by a PDF-capable desktop application. Exporting through SVG can preserve vector geometry, but the exact menu names and PDF support depend on the application version.

For automated conversion, a programming library such as NetworkX can read compatible GML data with read_gml(), while a plotting library can render the graph to PDF. This requires choosing a layout and styling the graph in code, so the result will not necessarily match its appearance in yEd. It is unsuitable when the source depends on application-specific visual attributes that the library does not recognize.

Using an online converter

Services such as Zamzar or Convertio can be considered only when their current input list explicitly accepts .gml and offers PDF output. Upload the file, choose PDF, submit the conversion, and download the result; then verify the graph manually. Online services may parse only common GML structures and may ignore coordinates, colors, labels, edge styles, or embedded resources. Do not upload confidential diagrams, proprietary network data, or regulated documents unless the service's storage and deletion terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

GML files can contain application-specific keys and optional attributes. An importer may preserve the graph topology while discarding layout coordinates, custom colors, images, arrowheads, hyperlinks, or label formatting. Compare the imported graph with the source application before exporting PDF.

Large graphs can produce unreadable PDFs even when conversion succeeds. Adjust the layout, increase the page size, divide the graph into logical sections, or create an overview page with detailed pages. Check that fonts support all required characters and that the PDF contains a text layer if readers need to search or copy labels.

Renaming .gml to .pdf does not convert the file. A PDF printer can capture the graph only after a compatible application has opened and rendered it; it cannot interpret GML by itself.
