A COLPKG file may need conversion when a Bento database collection must be shared with people who do not have Bento or preserved as a fixed, printable record. PDF stores the visible database output, but it does not preserve Bento’s editable fields, relationships, or database behavior.

What the COLPKG format is

COLPKG is a FileMaker Bento collection package used by Bento, Apple’s discontinued personal database application for macOS. Bento creates collection packages when users export a group of libraries or database content for transfer or backup. The package can contain records, forms, layouts, media, and related database information rather than a sequence of printable pages.

Because a COLPKG file is a Bento data package, ordinary PDF utilities cannot reliably render it directly. Renaming the extension or opening the package in a text editor does not convert its contents.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page layout, text, images, tables, and print settings across operating systems. It is suitable for emailing a read-only copy, printing records, submitting documents, and long-term visual archiving. A PDF exported from Bento contains the selected records and the chosen layout; it is not an editable copy of the original database.

How to convert COLPKG to PDF

Using Bento on macOS

1. Install and open a compatible version of FileMaker Bento on a Mac that can run it. Bento is discontinued, so current macOS versions may require an older Mac or a compatible legacy macOS environment.
2. Import the collection package through File → Import and select the .colpkg file, or open it with Bento if the installed version associates the extension directly.
3. Open the required library, choose the form or table layout, and filter or select the records that should appear in the PDF.
4. Use File → Print, select PDF → Save as PDF in the macOS print dialog, choose a filename such as records.pdf, and save the output.

For a large collection, print each required library or filtered record set separately. Review page orientation, scaling, margins, headers, and the selected record range before saving.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Keep the original COLPKG package alongside the PDF when the data may need editing or restructuring later. A PDF is a fixed presentation format, and converting it back will not recreate Bento’s database structure. If Bento cannot open the package, obtain the same or a compatible Bento release before attempting conversion; generic office applications such as LibreOffice do not natively interpret COLPKG files.
