What the ODP format is

ODP, or OpenDocument Presentation, is an open, XML-based slide format packaged in a ZIP container. LibreOffice Impress, Apache OpenOffice Impress, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications create and edit it; Microsoft PowerPoint can open many ODP files, but compatibility varies. An ODP can contain slide layouts, text, images, charts, tables, speaker notes, audio, video, transitions, and other presentation objects.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format intended to preserve document appearance across operating systems and applications. It is suitable for email, printing, submission portals, and distribution because recipients can open it with widely available PDF software instead of a presentation editor. A PDF normally preserves the rendered appearance rather than the editable slide structure, and animations, transitions, audio, and video become static or unavailable.

How to convert an ODP file

Using LibreOffice Impress

1. Open the .odp file in LibreOffice Impress.
2. Check the slide dimensions, fonts, images, hyperlinks, hidden slides, and notes before exporting.
3. Choose File → Export as PDF, or select the PDF toolbar button.
4. Set the export options. Depending on the LibreOffice version, these include the slide range, image compression or resolution, notes, comments, hidden slides, hyperlinks, tagged PDF, and PDF/A.
5. Choose the destination and filename, then select Export.

For batch or scripted conversion with LibreOffice installed, run:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output presentation.odp

On some systems the executable is named soffice. The command writes the PDF to output; use a separate output directory to avoid replacing the source file.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Fonts: If a font is unavailable, the converter may substitute another font, changing line wrapping, text size, or object placement. Install the source fonts before exporting, or use fonts that can legally be supplied with the presentation.
• Animations and media: A normal PDF contains static pages. Video, audio, transitions, animated objects, and some interactive effects will not remain playable or animated.
• Links: LibreOffice usually retains hyperlinks, but test links attached to shapes, images, custom objects, or external files in the generated PDF.
• Notes and handouts: The standard PDF export creates one page per slide unless another layout is selected. For speaker notes or several slides per printed page, use the relevant notes or handout export option, or use File → Print with a handout layout and a PDF printer.
• Images: PDF export settings can apply JPEG compression or reduce image resolution. Use lossless or higher-resolution settings for print output; compressed images generally produce smaller files for screen viewing.
• Unsupported features: Embedded objects, proprietary media codecs, advanced effects, custom fonts, and application-specific objects may render differently or disappear. Compare the PDF with the ODP on another device before sending or archiving it.
• Editing: Keep the original ODP if future changes are possible. Text and graphics in a PDF may be selectable, but the original slide hierarchy, master layouts, transitions, and object editability are not reliably preserved.
