A recipient may require a .pptx file to edit a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint or display it on an Office-compatible device. Converting the file also preserves a more practical editing format for Microsoft 365 workflows, but the result should be checked for layout and media changes.

What the ODP format is

ODP is the OpenDocument Presentation format defined by the OpenDocument standard. LibreOffice Impress, Apache OpenOffice Impress, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications create and open ODP files; they are common when presentations originate from Linux or open-source office suites.

An ODP file is a ZIP-based package containing XML and related resources for slide text, layouts, images, charts, drawing objects, notes, transitions, animations, and media references. ODP and PPTX represent some presentation features differently, so opening an ODP file in PowerPoint can change unsupported effects, fonts, charts, or embedded objects.

What the PPTX format is

PPTX is Microsoft PowerPoint’s Office Open XML presentation format. PowerPoint and many current office applications support it, and it is usually the appropriate target when recipients need to edit slides in PowerPoint or use them with Microsoft 365, Teams, or SharePoint.

PPTX can store editable text, slide masters, speaker notes, charts, tables, media, transitions, animations, and embedded or linked objects. It does not guarantee identical rendering between applications: fonts, codecs, transitions, animations, and application-specific objects can still behave differently.

How to convert ODP to PPTX

LibreOffice Impress

1. Open the .odp file in LibreOffice Impress.
2. Review the slides before saving, especially fonts, line wrapping, diagrams, charts, animations, audio, video, and object positions.
3. Choose File → Save As.
4. Set the file type to PowerPoint 2007–365 (*.pptx) and choose Save.
5. If LibreOffice asks whether to retain the current format, select Use PowerPoint 2007–365 Format.
6. Open the saved .pptx file and verify it separately; do not assume that a successful save means every feature transferred unchanged.

LibreOffice can also perform unattended conversion from a command line:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to pptx --outdir output presentation.odp

Use soffice instead of libreoffice on installations that provide that executable. The output directory must already exist, and the converted file normally keeps the source name with a .pptx extension. For multiple files, supply a file pattern or run the command from a script.

Microsoft PowerPoint

1. Open PowerPoint and choose File → Open → Browse.
2. Select the ODP file. PowerPoint may show a compatibility notice while importing it.
3. Inspect the imported slides, with particular attention to fonts, diagrams, charts, animations, audio, and video.
4. Choose File → Save As, select PowerPoint Presentation (*.pptx), and save a new file.

PowerPoint is often the best final conversion tool when the presentation will be delivered or edited in PowerPoint, because its own rendering engine can expose compatibility problems before distribution. LibreOffice is a practical choice when PowerPoint is unavailable or when batch processing is required.

Quality and compatibility checks

ODP-to-PPTX conversion is not guaranteed to be lossless. Open the resulting file in the software and on the device used for the presentation, then run the slideshow and inspect every slide at its intended resolution.

• Fonts: A missing font is replaced with another font, which can alter line breaks, text overflow, and object positions. Install the required fonts on the destination system or replace uncommon fonts before conversion. PowerPoint can embed some fonts when their licenses permit embedding, but embedded fonts do not solve every application or licensing limitation.
• Animations and transitions: Basic effects often transfer, while application-specific effects, timing, triggers, and motion paths may be simplified, replaced, or removed.
• Charts and diagrams: Charts, grouped drawing elements, and OpenDocument-specific objects can change formatting or become static graphics instead of remaining fully editable.
• Media: Linked audio and video can fail when their file paths are not preserved. Confirm that media is embedded or available at the expected path, use a codec supported by the presentation computer, and test playback.
• Macros and embedded content: OpenDocument macros and OpenDocument-specific embedded objects generally do not transfer reliably. A standard .pptx file cannot store PowerPoint VBA macros; presentations that require VBA must use .pptm and should be checked in desktop PowerPoint.
• Original file: Keep the original ODP until the converted presentation has passed visual, editing, and playback checks.
