A PDF is useful when an SPSS dataset must be shared as a fixed report for viewing, printing, or archiving rather than edited as data. Because a POR file stores data and metadata instead of page layout, the useful conversion usually exports selected tables, charts, or records as PDF.

What the POR format is

.por is the IBM SPSS Portable format for exchanging statistical datasets between SPSS installations and operating systems. A POR file can contain data values, variable definitions, value labels, missing-value settings, and other dataset metadata. IBM SPSS Statistics opens and creates POR files; GNU PSPP can read many of them. POR files commonly come from survey processing, archived research, and older SPSS workflows.

The extension is not universal, so identify the source application if the file does not open in SPSS or PSPP.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that preserves pages, fonts, tables, charts, and images across operating systems. It is suitable for distributing statistical results, printing reports, and storing a fixed snapshot of an analysis.

PDF does not preserve the editable dataset structure, variable metadata, missing-value definitions, or statistical operations contained in the POR file. A PDF export is therefore a presentation of the data or results, not a replacement for the original dataset.

How to convert a POR file to PDF

Using IBM SPSS Statistics

1. Open IBM SPSS Statistics and select File → Open → Data.
2. Select the .por file. If it is not shown, change the file filter to SPSS Portable or all files.
3. Check the data in Data View and the variable definitions in Variable View. Verify labels, measurement settings, missing values, and character encoding before producing output.
4. Create the required analyses, pivot tables, charts, or filtered data report.
5. In the Output Viewer, select File → Export, choose PDF as the document type, select the output objects to include, and save the file.

To show raw records, first create a report or table containing the required variables and cases. Exporting statistical output does not automatically produce a complete, readable copy of the dataset.

Using GNU PSPP

1. Open PSPP and select File → Open, then choose the POR file.
2. Inspect the imported variables and values, and run the required analyses or create a data report.
3. In the PSPP output window, use its PDF export command if that option is available in your version, then choose a filename and destination.

PSPP compatibility depends on the SPSS features used to create the file. Check the imported labels, missing values, dates, and nonstandard variables before exporting results.

Using the built-in online converter

• Large datasets can produce very large, difficult-to-read PDFs. Export selected variables, filtered cases, summary tables, or charts instead of every record.
• Verify decimal separators, dates, value labels, missing-value codes, weights, and calculated variables after opening the POR file. Conversion to PDF does not correct an import error.
• Keep the original POR file with the PDF when the data may need further analysis; the PDF is not an editable statistical source.
