Convert XMCD to PDF

Recipients may need a PDF when they do not have Mathcad, or when an engineering worksheet must be submitted, printed, or archived with fixed pagination. PDF shows the worksheet’s equations, plots, text, and calculated results without requiring the authoring application.

What the XMCD format is

XMCD is the XML-based worksheet format used by legacy PTC Mathcad releases, especially Mathcad 11 through Mathcad 15. It can contain mathematical regions, units, variables, plots, text, and worksheet layout. Compressed Mathcad worksheets may use the related .xmcdz extension.

XMCD is not a general-purpose XML document. Opening it in a browser or XML editor does not render Mathcad equations, plots, or calculated regions correctly; Mathcad must interpret the worksheet and its dependencies.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout format for viewing, printing, submission, and distribution. It can preserve page size, pagination, text, equations, plots, and visible results while allowing recipients to use standard PDF readers.

PDF is a presentation copy, not an editable Mathcad worksheet. It does not preserve native calculation regions, variables, formulas, or recalculation behavior.

How to convert XMCD to PDF

Using PTC Mathcad

1. Open the .xmcd file in a compatible Windows installation of PTC Mathcad, preferably the release that created it or Mathcad 15 for many Mathcad 11–15 worksheets. Mathcad 15 is legacy software and may require an existing licensed installation.
2. Use File → Open, allow the worksheet to recalculate, and resolve warnings, undefined variables, unit errors, missing references, or unavailable input files.
3. Set the worksheet’s paper size, margins, orientation, headers, and page breaks using its page or print settings.
4. Choose File → Print, select Microsoft Print to PDF on supported Windows systems or another installed PDF printer, set the page range and printer layout, and save the result as worksheet.pdf.

Printing is usually the most compatible method because legacy Mathcad installations do not consistently provide a native PDF export command. If the installed release offers a PDF option under File → Save As or an export menu, compare its pagination and graphics with the print-generated file before distributing it.

Using Mathcad Prime

Mathcad Prime uses .mcdx rather than .xmcd. Some Prime releases include a legacy worksheet converter that can import XMCD files. Open the converted worksheet, check unsupported functions and formatting changes, then use File → Print with a PDF printer. Support depends on the Prime version and the features used in the source worksheet; conversion is not guaranteed to reproduce every legacy region.

Online conversion options

Reputable general services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may support common XML or document formats, but they do not reliably interpret Mathcad XMCD regions, calculate worksheets, or render plots correctly. They should not be treated as XMCD converters unless the service explicitly identifies Mathcad worksheet support and you have verified the output. Do not rename .xmcd to .xml; the extension change does not add Mathcad rendering capability. For confidential engineering calculations, use Mathcad and a local PDF printer rather than uploading the source file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Recalculate before printing. The worksheet may contain cached values from its last save, while current references, units, data files, or external functions are unavailable.
• Inspect the PDF for plots, equations, special fonts, wide regions, clipped content, and page breaks. Printer settings can split a worksheet region across pages or change its scale.
• External references, custom functions, program files, and unsupported features can generate warnings or incomplete results when the XMCD file is opened or imported.
• Keep the original .xmcd or .xmcdz file and all required referenced files if future editing or recalculation is necessary.
