Engineering teams convert legacy Mathcad worksheets when current PTC Mathcad Prime installations require editable .mcdx files. The conversion is needed to maintain calculations, update designs, and share worksheets with Prime users without rebuilding every equation manually.

XMCD and MCDX formats

XMCD is the XML-based worksheet format used by legacy PTC Mathcad, principally Mathcad 11 through Mathcad 15. An .xmcd worksheet can contain equations, units, text, plots, programming regions, symbolic calculations, and links to external data or components.

MCDX is the native editable worksheet format of PTC Mathcad Prime. Prime uses .mcdx for its own calculation regions, plots, formatting, and metadata; legacy Mathcad versions cannot open MCDX worksheets. Do not confuse .mcdx with the older binary .mcd format, which may need an additional legacy conversion step.

Convert XMCD with PTC Mathcad Prime

Use the PTC Mathcad Prime XMCD/MCD Conversion Utility supplied with the relevant Prime installation. This is the supported converter; renaming .xmcd to .mcdx, office conversion tools, and generic online converters do not create a working Prime worksheet.

  1. Install PTC Mathcad Prime and its legacy worksheet conversion utility. The utility is commonly installed with Prime and may be listed in the Windows Start menu as a Mathcad Prime XMCD/MCD Converter rather than inside the normal File → Open command.
  2. Make a copy of the source .xmcd file. Keep linked Excel workbooks, data files, images, custom functions, and other dependencies in the same relative folders used by the original worksheet.
  3. Start the conversion utility, select the source .xmcd file or source folder, and choose an output folder. Configure any available overwrite or logging options before running the conversion.
  4. Run the conversion and open the generated .mcdx file in the same Prime release used for conversion.
  5. Recalculate the worksheet and check numerical results, units, plots, symbolic regions, program blocks, and external-data imports. Save the reviewed worksheet from Prime.

If the converter is absent, repair or modify the Prime installation and select its conversion or migration component. Requirements differ by Prime release: some migration workflows, particularly for older .mcd worksheets, require a compatible Mathcad 15 installation. Follow the migration documentation for the installed Prime version rather than downloading an unrelated third-party converter.

Compatibility checks

Conversion maps worksheet content to Prime equivalents but does not guarantee identical results. Legacy Mathcad and Mathcad Prime differ in calculation behavior, symbolic processing, functions, programming syntax, plotting, and handling of some units.

Review worksheets containing custom DLLs, add-ins, OLE or embedded objects, scripted controls, external data connections, and specialized symbolic operations. These items can fail to convert or require manual replacement. Preserve the original .xmcd file and its dependencies until the converted worksheet has passed technical review.

No reputable browser-based converter is suitable for producing editable MCDX files. Avoid uploading proprietary engineering calculations to unverified conversion sites; the PTC desktop utility is the appropriate tool for this format pair.
