Convert BTD to PDF

People convert a .btd file when recipients need a fixed document they can view, print, or archive without Business-in-a-Box. PDF also preserves the document’s page layout more reliably when it is shared between computers.

What the BTD format is

In the Documents category, .btd generally identifies a Business-in-a-Box document created by BizTree. Business-in-a-Box users—especially small businesses and offices—use these files for business letters, forms, plans, contracts, reports, and other prepared business documents.

BTD is a proprietary working format. Its editable content, document structure, and any Business-in-a-Box-specific templates or fields are intended to be handled by the Business-in-a-Box application. Do not confuse it with .btw, the BarTender label-document extension; BarTender is a different product.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that can preserve text placement, page size, fonts, images, and pagination across operating systems. Most computers and mobile devices can open it without the software that created the source file.

PDF is suitable for sending a finished document, printing it, submitting a copy, or retaining an appearance-controlled archive. It is not a full editable replacement for BTD: conversion normally removes Business-in-a-Box editing features, templates, and application-specific fields.

How to convert BTD to PDF

1. Install the version of Business-in-a-Box that supports the file, then open the .btd document. A newer application version may open an older file, but an older version may not open a document saved by a newer one.
2. Check the document before exporting. Confirm page size, orientation, margins, text, images, page breaks, and any populated fields. Replace missing fonts or linked resources if the application reports them.
3. Use the application’s PDF command, typically under File → Save As or File → Export, select PDF, choose the output folder, and save the file with a .pdf extension. The exact menu name varies by Business-in-a-Box version.
4. If the installed version has no PDF export, choose File → Print, select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or a system PDF option on macOS, set the correct paper size and page range, and print to a PDF file.
5. Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and inspect every page, including line wrapping, images, page boundaries, special characters, and print scaling. Use 100% or actual-size printing when the physical dimensions matter.

Quality and compatibility limits

Printing to PDF captures the document’s rendered appearance, not its original editable structure. Text may remain selectable in the PDF, but Business-in-a-Box templates, controls, data fields, and other editing behavior generally do not survive as editable objects.

Font substitution can change line breaks and pagination. Keep the original fonts installed, use the same Business-in-a-Box version where possible, and verify the output on the target printer. If the BTD references external images or other resources, keep those resources available while opening and exporting it.

There is no broadly reliable online converter for proprietary Business-in-a-Box BTD files. General services such as Adobe Acrobat online or PDF24 cannot normally interpret BTD directly; convert it in Business-in-a-Box first. Avoid uploading confidential business documents to an unknown service. If the source application is unavailable, ask the sender to export the file to PDF or DOC, or provide a print-ready copy.
