A musician may need a printable or shareable score when the recipient does not have Guitar Pro installed. Converting the project to PDF preserves the visible tablature and notation in a format supported by common devices, printers, and document readers.

What the GP format is

A GP file is a native Guitar Pro project that can contain tablature, standard notation, song structure, tempo, instruments, effects, lyrics, and playback data. The .gp extension is used mainly by Guitar Pro 7 and Guitar Pro 8; older files commonly use .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, or .gpx.

Guitar Pro creates and edits arrangements for guitar, bass, ukulele, and other fretted instruments. A GP file is an editable, application-specific project rather than a universal reading format, so its notation and playback features depend on compatible software.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed to display and print pages consistently. For sheet music, it preserves the exported page arrangement, staff and tablature positions, fonts, and notation across operating systems and PDF readers.

A PDF normally contains a visual representation of the score, not the original editable arrangement. It does not preserve Guitar Pro playback, instrument settings, editable rhythmic data, or interactive effects. Keep the original GP file when someone must edit the arrangement or play it back.

How to convert GP to PDF

Using Guitar Pro

1. Install a Guitar Pro release that supports the file. Guitar Pro 7 or 8 can open many .gp files, while older formats may require an earlier release or an intermediate save.
2. Open Guitar Pro and select File → Open, then choose the GP file.
3. Review the score before exporting. Check the tracks, tuning, notation visibility, repeats, and page layout. Set the paper size, scale, margins, and other layout options for the intended print format.
4. Select File → Export → PDF, choose the filename and destination, and save the file.
5. Open the PDF in a reader and inspect every page for clipped systems, unexpected page breaks, missing notation, or blank pages.

Guitar Pro is generally the most accurate option because it reads the project’s native tablature, repeats, alternate endings, bends, harmonics, and notation. Using MuseScore

MuseScore can import some Guitar Pro files and export the imported score through File → Export with PDF selected. Import support and visual fidelity vary by Guitar Pro version and feature; verify tuplets, repeats, bends, lyrics, percussion, voices, and multi-track layout before using the result for performance or publication.

Quality and compatibility limitations

PDF page breaks and spacing can change because output depends on the application’s layout engine, installed fonts, paper size, and scaling. Set A4, Letter, or the required paper size before exporting and use print preview to detect truncated systems.

Older, damaged, or version-incompatible GP files may fail to open or may lose unsupported notation when resaved. Keep a backup of the original before opening it in another release or converting it. Linked audio, MIDI playback, and other project resources do not become playable inside a normal PDF.
