Convert SIB to PDF

Musicians export Sibelius scores to PDF when recipients need to view or print the notation without Sibelius, or when a fixed-layout copy is required for submission, distribution, or archiving. PDF preserves the rendered pages across devices, but it does not preserve the score as an editable notation project.

What the SIB format is

.sib is the native project format of Avid Sibelius notation software. It stores editable notation such as notes, lyrics, instruments, text, layout, playback settings, linked parts, and score metadata. Sibelius, Sibelius First, and older releases including Sibelius 6 and 7 can create SIB files.

A SIB file is not a page image or a general-purpose document. It can depend on the Sibelius version, installed notation fonts, linked parts, and other score resources, so generic viewers and online converters may not render it correctly.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that preserves page size, staff placement, margins, fonts, symbols, and page breaks for viewing and printing on different operating systems. Recipients generally need only a PDF viewer, not Sibelius.

How to convert SIB to PDF

Using Sibelius on Windows or macOS

1. Open the .sib file in the same Sibelius version or a newer version that supports it. Save a copy first if the file may need to remain compatible with an older release.
2. Inspect the full score and required parts in File → Print or print preview. Resolve missing-font warnings, substituted symbols, incorrect page breaks, transposition issues, and unwanted blank pages.
3. Use File → Export → PDF if that command is available. Select the full score, selected pages, or the parts required by the export dialog, then set the page size and output location.
4. Open the saved PDF in a viewer and check every page, including accidentals, noteheads, articulations, dynamics, lyrics, tuplets, and page numbers.

Older Sibelius releases may not provide PDF export. Use File → Print, choose Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or Save as PDF in the macOS print dialog, set the intended paper size and scaling, and print to a new PDF. This method captures the score as printed and may offer fewer controls for exporting multiple parts or PDF metadata.

Using an online converter

Online conversion is less predictable because SIB is a proprietary, version-sensitive format. For a nonconfidential file, CloudConvert can be checked as an online option when its current converter page explicitly accepts .sib input and offers PDF output: upload the file, choose PDF, start the conversion, download the result, and inspect every page. Do not upload unreleased compositions, client work, examination material, or personal data unless the service’s retention, processing, and deletion terms are acceptable. If the service does not explicitly list SIB support, it cannot be assumed to interpret the file correctly.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The PDF contains rendered pages, not editable Sibelius notation. Keep the original .sib file for future edits, transposition, part extraction, playback changes, or layout work.

Direct export from Sibelius normally gives the most faithful result. If the score uses unavailable fonts or Sibelius reports substituted symbols, noteheads, articulations, or text can change in the PDF. Verify page scaling before printing; options such as “fit to page” can reduce the staff size or alter the intended margins.

If the destination requires an editable score in another notation application, export MusicXML from Sibelius and open it in compatible software such as MuseScore before exporting PDF. MusicXML can change spacing, tuplets, lyrics, text styles, linked parts, and playback information, so it is a conversion route for interoperability rather than a replacement for direct PDF export when visual fidelity matters.
