Free online P65 to WORD converter

Legacy PageMaker documents are often converted when their text must be edited in Microsoft Word or shared with people who cannot open PageMaker. A Word copy is suitable for revising content, while the original layout should be retained separately when print fidelity matters.

What the P65 format is

P65 is a document format used by Adobe PageMaker 6.5, a desktop-publishing program from the 1990s. Files with the .p65 extension may contain linked text stories, independently positioned text frames, master pages, placed graphics, fonts, and page-layout settings.

PageMaker was used for newsletters, brochures, manuals, advertisements, and other print-oriented publications. Modern versions of Microsoft Word do not open .p65 files directly.

What WORD means

WORD usually means a Microsoft Word document in .docx format, or occasionally the older binary .doc format. Use .docx where available: it is the current Word format and is supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and other office suites.

Word is designed around flowing paragraphs, styles, tables, comments, and revision tools. It is a useful target for editable text, but it does not use the same fixed-page layout model as PageMaker.

Convert the file

1. Open the P65-to-WORD converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the source .p65 file.
3. Choose WORD as the output format; select .docx if a Word-format choice is offered.
4. Start conversion, then download the converted document.
5. Open the result in Microsoft Word and save a local copy before editing.

For files that cannot be converted or need manual recovery, use a working installation of Adobe PageMaker 6.5, normally in an older Windows environment or virtual machine. Some Adobe InDesign releases can open PageMaker 6.0 through 7.0 documents; this can help recover a P65 file, but InDesign is primarily a PageMaker-to-InDesign migration path rather than a direct Word-export solution.

If PageMaker or InDesign can open the document, export or copy the text to an interchange format such as .rtf when available, open that file in Word, then use File → Save As to create a .docx copy. This method may require rebuilding headings, tables, images, and page structure manually.

Layout and compatibility limits

PageMaker places objects at fixed coordinates on a page, while Word reflows text according to page size, margins, styles, and installed fonts. A converted document can retain readable text but change line endings, page breaks, columns, text wrapping, image placement, and the order of separate text frames.

Inspect multi-column pages, tables assembled from text boxes, text over graphics, rotated objects, footnotes, master-page content, and linked images. Missing fonts alter character widths and can substantially change pagination. Graphics may be embedded, omitted, rasterized, or reduced in quality depending on the file and conversion method.

Keep the original .p65 file unchanged. When an exact visual record is required, create or retain a PDF in addition to the Word document; use the Word file as the editable-content version, not as the authoritative print-layout version.
