Old PageMaker publications may need conversion when a current publishing workflow requires an editable Adobe InDesign document. The conversion also helps recover archived layouts for revision, but it is not reliably available through modern online conversion services.
What the P65 format is
.p65 is the publication format used by Adobe PageMaker 6.5. PageMaker users created brochures, newsletters, books, advertisements, and other page-layout documents in this format. A P65 file can contain text frames, page geometry, styles, placed graphics, and links to external fonts and images.
Archived publications often depend on the original fonts, linked graphics, and PageMaker resource files. Those assets may not be embedded in the P65 file, so collect them before attempting conversion.
What the INDD format is
.indd is Adobe InDesign's native document format. It supports current InDesign page-layout features such as parent pages, modern text composition, OpenType fonts, transparency, preflight, interactive documents, and current print and PDF workflows.
INDD is appropriate when the layout must be edited in InDesign or transferred to an InDesign production team. It is not a universal interchange format; recipients generally need InDesign or a compatible workflow.
How to convert P65 to INDD
The most reliable method is the PageMaker import filter included in older licensed Adobe InDesign releases. InDesign CS6, not “CC6,” is a commonly used last-generation option with PageMaker import support. Current Creative Cloud releases generally do not include this filter.
- Collect the P65 file, linked graphics, original fonts, and any PageMaker resource files. Preserve the original folder structure when possible.
- Install a compatible, legally licensed older InDesign release and choose File → Open. Select the
.p65file and accept the conversion prompt. - Resolve missing fonts and links using the font-substitution controls and Links panel. Font substitutions can change line breaks, text flow, and pagination.
- Review every page for overset text, missing graphics, shifted objects, altered master-page items, changed colors, damaged transparency, and modified text composition.
- Choose File → Save As, select InDesign Document, and save the result as an
.inddfile. Keep the original P65 file unchanged. - For transfer or archiving, use File → Package to collect the INDD file, linked graphics, and fonts that may legally be packaged.
No reputable online service reliably converts P65 into a fully editable INDD layout. Services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert may handle common document and image formats, but they are not a dependable solution for this proprietary PageMaker-to-InDesign conversion. A specialist prepress or document-conversion service is the practical alternative when an older InDesign installation is unavailable; confirm that it can return an editable INDD file and ask how unpublished files are protected.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Opening P65 in InDesign is an import and reconstruction process, not a byte-for-byte format conversion. Features without direct InDesign equivalents can be changed, discarded, or converted into ordinary page objects.
Check paragraph and character styles, hyphenation, kerning, tab stops, text threading, anchored objects, layers, master pages, tables, spot colors, trapping settings, placed EPS files, image resolution, page size, margins, and bleed before exporting a print PDF.
If the P65 file cannot be opened, export it from PageMaker as PDF if PageMaker is available. A PDF preserves the appearance but does not create editable InDesign text frames, styles, or individual PageMaker objects. Placing that PDF in InDesign normally creates a page-sized PDF object; it is a visual fallback, not an INDD conversion.
