Free online LNK to WORD converter

A shortcut may need to be shared or archived as an editable Word record, or its target may need conversion for software that accepts Word documents. Because .lnk stores a reference rather than the target's contents, converting the shortcut and converting the referenced document are different operations.

What the LNK format is

.lnk is the Windows Shell Link format used for shortcuts. Windows, File Explorer, installers, applications, and users create LNK files that point to programs, folders, documents, network locations, removable drives, or other targets.

An LNK can store a target path, command-line arguments, working directory, icon location, window state, volume information, and shortcut-related timestamps. It is normally not a copy of the target, so it does not contain the target document's text, images, or formatting.

What the WORD format is

WORD usually means a Microsoft Word document. The two relevant filename extensions are .docx, the current Office Open XML format, and .doc, the older binary Word format.

.docx supports editable text, styles, tables, images, comments, and tracked changes. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and other compatible editors can open it. Use .doc only when a legacy application specifically requires it; .docx is generally the better format for sharing and continued editing.

How to convert an LNK file to Word

There are two valid conversion paths:

• Convert the shortcut details: create a Word document containing the LNK's stored properties, such as its target path and arguments.
• Convert the target document: locate the file referenced by the shortcut, then open and save that actual file as .docx.

Using the built-in converter

1. Open the LNK-to-WORD converter on 101convert.com. No software installation is required.
2. Select or upload the .lnk file and choose WORD as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated Word file.
4. Open the result in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer and check the displayed paths, arguments, and other shortcut information.

The generated document represents the shortcut metadata available to the converter. It does not normally reproduce the contents of the file referenced by the shortcut.

Converting the referenced document

1. In Windows, right-click the LNK file and select Properties.
2. On the Shortcut tab, inspect the Target field. Do not treat any command-line arguments after the target as part of the filename.
3. Open the target directly in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. If it is a Word document, preserve the original before conversion.
4. In Word, select File → Save As, choose Word Document (*.docx), and save the new file. In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Save As and select the Word 2007–365 format.

If the target is an older .doc file, saving it as .docx performs the actual document conversion. If the target is a PDF, image, or another format, the appropriate source-format conversion rules apply instead.

Extracting shortcut details manually

Windows can read common LNK properties through Windows Script Host. In PowerShell, replace the path and run:

Copy the verified output into Word, then use File → Save As and select .docx. This method is useful when the document must show exact shortcut properties rather than an automatically generated interpretation.

Quality and compatibility limits

Paths may contain environment variables, relative components, UNC network locations, or drive letters for removable media. A converter may preserve these values as stored or resolve them on the computer performing the conversion; verify every path before relying on the result.

If the target was moved, deleted, or is on an unavailable network or removable drive, the shortcut cannot provide the missing document. Recover the target from its original location, a backup, the Recycle Bin, or a synchronized copy before converting it.

Do not double-click an untrusted LNK merely to inspect it: a shortcut can launch an application with embedded arguments. Use Properties or metadata extraction, and inspect suspicious files in an isolated environment.
