Convert TXT to MP3

A music player, audiobook app, or car stereo cannot open a plain-text document, so the text must first be synthesized as speech. Exporting that speech as MP3 creates a small, widely supported audio file for listening, sharing, or playback on devices that do not support TXT.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text document format containing characters but no fonts, images, page layout, headings, or embedded audio. Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit, Linux text editors, programming tools, export utilities, and document applications create TXT files for notes, transcripts, logs, configuration documentation, copied text, and machine-generated reports.

A TXT file does not define one universal character encoding. UTF-8 is the safest choice for accented letters and non-Latin scripts; older files may use Windows-1252 or another regional encoding. Garbled characters must be corrected before speech synthesis by reopening the file with the right encoding or resaving it as UTF-8.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy, compressed audio format supported by phones, computers, car stereos, media players, podcast applications, and many audiobook workflows. A converted MP3 contains audio generated by a text-to-speech voice; it does not retain the original characters, formatting, or searchable text.

MP3 reduces the size of the spoken output while retaining broad compatibility. For speech, 64–96 kbps mono is usually sufficient; 128 kbps can preserve more detail when the voice sounds harsh at lower rates or when the file also contains music.

Convert TXT with Balabolka on Windows

1. Install Balabolka from the official Cross+A website and install a suitable Windows speech voice if the required language is unavailable.
2. Open the file with File → Open. Check accented characters, symbols, and non-Latin text; reopen it with the correct encoding or resave it as UTF-8 if they display incorrectly.
3. Select the language and voice, then adjust speech rate, pitch, and volume. Render a few paragraphs first to check pronunciation of names, numbers, abbreviations, technical terms, and URLs.
4. Choose File → Save Audio File, select MP3, choose a filename such as narration.mp3, and set the bitrate and mono or stereo channels in the audio options.
5. For a long document, split the TXT into chapters or sections before exporting. Separate files are easier to navigate and allow a corrected section to be rendered without recreating the entire recording.

Windows Narrator is a screen reader, not an MP3 export tool. Use a text-to-speech application such as Balabolka for direct audio-file output.

Convert TXT on macOS with say and FFmpeg

macOS can synthesize a TXT file with the built-in say command, but it normally writes an AIFF file. Convert that intermediate file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i narration.aiff -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k -ac 1 narration.mp3

Replace Alex with an installed voice. List available voices with say -v '?'; voice names and language availability vary by macOS version and installed voice packages. Install FFmpeg separately, for example with brew install ffmpeg after installing Homebrew. Listen to the MP3 before deleting narration.aiff.

Use an online text-to-speech converter

Services such as TTSMaker and Narakeet can accept pasted or uploaded text, provide voice and language choices, and export MP3. The usual process is to upload or paste the TXT content, select a voice, preview a short section, choose MP3 and the available quality setting, then download the result.

Online conversion sends the text to a third-party server. Do not upload confidential notes, credentials, personal records, or unpublished material unless the provider’s current storage and deletion terms are acceptable. Free services may impose character, duration, file-size, queue, or account limits, making desktop software more suitable for long documents or repeated conversions.

Quality and compatibility limits

• TXT has no structural or pronunciation metadata. Add punctuation for pauses, insert paragraph breaks, expand abbreviations, and rewrite symbols that the selected voice pronounces incorrectly.
• Speech engines differ in pronunciation, pacing, language support, and available voices. Test a representative sample before rendering the full document.
• Encoding errors appear in the text before MP3 encoding. Lowering the MP3 bitrate will not repair missing accents or corrupted characters.
• MP3 is lossy and cannot preserve the exact source text. Keep the original TXT for editing, copying, searching, accessibility, or archival use.
• Long documents can produce large audio tracks. Splitting by chapter improves playback navigation and makes revisions faster.
